The cost of Xbox Live Gold is used to pay for a number of things. It covers the cost and maintenance of the Xbox Live servers, the Party system, enforcement, anti-cheat detection/prevention, the two 'free' Games with Gold titles offered each month.

Consoles are sold at a loss and the cost is subsidised by subscriptions and software. Giving free Gold would increase the cost of the console.

You can only share if you live in the same home. Otherwise it violates Terms of Service and can lead to an account ban.
