I feel like a lot of appliances now have more complex controls than they need. My parents got a clothes dryer, it has like 20 different programs. You know what controls I need on a dryer? On/off and temperature high/low. That's IT.

That's how I feel about our new air fryer.

The first one we had was super basic. Temperature (we always left it on max) and time. Done.

The new one has two drawers, plus a dozen buttons for different types of food. I can't just choose a drawer, set a temp and time. I have to choose a food type, then mess around and adjust it after that - with every single press making a super loud beep, so it sounds like I'm beating up R2D2 while trying to make dinner.

The air fryer (and dryer, and microwave) at my home are all that way, Rhinne. Simple with dials and things. The timer on mine runs on clockwork or something. I can tell, because if you unplug the power the timer keeps going "tick-tick-tick".
Sometimes I visit my dad and he's like "Put the laundry in the dryer for me" and I'm like "Yeah no problem but you gotta talk me through this space shuttle launch sequence."

With the old one, I would put it on for 5 minutes, then when it beeped to say it was done, I could go in, shake the food and put on for another 5 minutes.

If I choose chips on this new one, it starts off with a 20 minute timer. I can't be relied on to remember to go in after 5 minutes, pull out the drawer and shake it. I need the timer to go off and tell me it's time. So I have to adjust the time down from 20 to 5 - with a beep every press.

Either that or I leave it on 20, but I have to set timers on my phone. Otherwise I'll completely forget the moment I sit down.
