Narratively, Lancer as a setting is a story about ideologies, political power, and a humanity striving for survival across a disparate galaxy of civilized utopias, authoritarian dominions, and untamed frontiers. Many have won their freedom, and yet many more still fight for their own. Although Lancer is a human-focused setting that avoids biological aliens (with one specifically highlighted exception), a major aspect of the setting are the role of digital Non-Human Persons, or NHPs - beings which exist within machines but are not AI, as they were not created by humanity but rather through a series of accidental events that defy causality. Paracausal phenomena is the closest the setting gets to "magic", and is often an explanation for the stranger and spookier aspects.
Mechanically, Lancer prioritizes crunchy grid-based mech combat with in-depth build specialization, and loose, flexible narrative / exploration rules. Lancer is arguably a "nu-4e" game in that it takes some clear inspiration from more skirmish-heavy games like D&D 4e. It's also inspired by and borrows mechanics from systems such as Shadow of the Demon Lord and Blades in the Dark.
