#orca slicer dropdown menus not working?

hi, my dropdown menus suddenly stopped working. They were perfectly fine yesterday, and I didn't touch anything in between then. I'm not able to click on any of the menus, but I am able to tick the boxes which is odd. (see pics for reference).

I've restarted my computer and orca slicer but didn't fix the issue. Any ideas?

#

running orca version 2.3.0 btw^

lucid burrow
#

try resetting the layout :
menu → view → reset window layout

fierce surge
#

it just moved my menu back to how i originally had it lol

#

which makes sense

lucid burrow
#

did you get system updates or was there an app crash?

#

what about the dropdown lists from the pref window?

fierce surge
#

there weren't any updates afaik, and the app never crashed

fierce surge
lucid burrow
#

so likely not a rendering issue but still weird

#

try deleting the config files and restart orca

fierce surge
#

sure i'll try that

#

dumb question, but i'm just deleting these bottom 3 files right?

#

or the bottom 4, or just orcaSlicer.conf (without the numbers)

lucid burrow
#

both .conf and .conf.bak (while orca is not running)

#

this won't affect your presets, only orca's config

fierce surge
#

ah okay i was worried i should back it up or something

lucid burrow
#

you can do backups just in case

fierce surge
#

sure sure

lucid burrow
#

I coded a batch for this purpose

fierce surge
#

alright, deleted the two files

fierce surge
#

am i good to just reopen orca?

lucid burrow
#

yeah

fierce surge
#

alrighty

lucid burrow
#

you'll get the initial setup again, just a few formalities

fierce surge
#

alright going through the introduction

#

it's asking to update orca- i take i shouldn't do that(?) for the sake of troubleshooting

#

to 2.3.0.1

lucid burrow
#

not yet

fierce surge
#

hmm the dropdowns still aren't functioning

#

maybe i should reinstall orca..?

#

not sure what to do lol

lucid burrow
#

do you have a lot of presets?

fierce surge
#

dont recall having that many

#

i think theres like 7, 4 of which were auto generated

#

realistically i only use 1 tho tbh

lucid burrow
#

here what I suggest to do :

#
  • grab your the presets you use the most, export the project as 3mf so you can import it and save the related settings later on
  • download the portable build of the latest Orca version, run it first before deleting anything
  • if that doesn't fix the issue, we'll then start from scratch with a clean appdata profile
fierce surge
#

alright i'll start with the presets

#

interesting to note that the dropdown menu under the printer tab does work

#

its just the ones under the main menu

lucid burrow
#

oh and be sure to dl from the official source

fierce surge
#

how should i grab the presets if i can't access the dropdown menu btw?

#

its currently set to the generic ender 3 v2 preset

#

but the one i actually use is likely blocked behind the dropdown menu lol

lucid burrow
#

navigating with arrows doesn't help?

#

I mean, even if the list is not expanded, you should be able to scroll with the arrow keys

fierce surge
#

i'm tapping the arrow keys and it's switching between the dif settings, but the arrow keys don't do anything under the preset menu

lucid burrow
#

nope, here is the normal behaviour

fierce surge
#

thats odd yeah

#

i have an older 3mf file with my settings though, i'll just use that

#

i think i recall there were clones of it that might be malware or something

lucid burrow
#

first 2 are fakes, the official links are in the chat's pins

fierce surge
#

gothca

#

running the latest OrcaSlicer_Windows_V2.3.1_portable.zip

#

fingers crossed haha

lucid burrow
#

it will load your current presets by default but I've got a last thing to try maybe

fierce surge
#

it works!

lucid burrow
#

well, nice. FYI, the only difference with the protable build is it has no installer, so you can give a shot to re-install it properly

fierce surge
#

ohh i see

#

i'm guessing i install this one then?

#

cool cool

#

and to uninstall 2.3.0, and the portable version, are there any specific steps to do that?

#

or is it sorta just deleting the file

lucid burrow
#

not really, you can have multiple Orca versions installed at a time but it's not a good idea to run multiple instances from different builds since they will rely on the same profile

#

you can uninstall the older one if that matters

fierce surge
#

right that makes sense- thats why i wanted to delete the older ones so i dont make that mistake by accident

#

and realistically i'm only going to be using one installation

#

okay this is really awkward but it's broken again in the official installer 😅

#

i uninstalled the 2.3.0 and the portable, installed the 2.3.1, ran it, and same issue

#

seems to only be working in the portable version

lucid burrow
#

doesn't make sense but, let's try a thing if you don't mind

fierce surge
#

yeah of course

lucid burrow
#

you got a desktop shortcut with the installation, right?

fierce surge
#

yes, in the taskbar

lucid burrow
#

make a copy on your desktop please

#

I mean, the shortcut only

#

you can also locate the exe's folder and send a shortcut with a right click on it

#

you decide

fierce surge
#

i'm not seeing the shortcut option...?

lucid burrow
#

I can make a quick vid if that may help

fierce surge
#

i could just be stupid and untech savvy

#

yes

#

please 😅

lucid burrow
#

give me a few minutes

fierce surge
#

thats all i was seeing^

lucid burrow
#

in summary :

  • open file location
  • send to your desktop (shortcut)
  • create a new folder
  • copy the path of the new folder
  • append --datadir "CopiedPath" to the shortcut's target
#

this will redirect the data output

#

if the issue remains, it will mean something is wrong with the installed build

fierce surge
#

okay, i copied the path into the new orca slicer target

#

full thing says

"C:\Program Files\OrcaSlicer\orca-slicer.exe --datadir "C:\Users\jjt15\OneDrive\Desktop\New folder"

lucid burrow
#

looks good, but delete the first "

#

C:\Program Files\OrcaSlicer\orca-slicer.exe --datadir "C:\Users\jjt15\OneDrive\Desktop\New folder"

fierce surge
fierce surge
lucid burrow
#

ah yes program files has a space

#

"C:\Program Files\OrcaSlicer\orca-slicer.exe" --datadir "C:\Users\jjt15\OneDrive\Desktop\New folder"

fierce surge
#

there we go lol

#

okay i hit apply and OK- what's next?

lucid burrow
#

start orca from that shortcut

fierce surge
#

gotcha

#

going through the setup process now

#

nope..

#

is there a downside to just using the portable version?

lucid burrow
#

it's the same, just no installer

#

you can manually delete the Orca folder from Program Files tho

#

it is corrupted somehow

fierce surge
#

alright i uninstalled it

fierce surge
#

what does it mean to not have an installer vs having one?

lucid burrow
#

it runs the same way, there is no other differences. the installer here is just a standard way to include it in the program dir with the related registry keys so it is also listed in the installed app window (Apps & Features)

fierce surge
#

ahhh i see

#

that makes sense

#

okay yeah i have no problem with that

#

thank you for your time and helping me solve this tho!

#

i really appreciate it- orca was effectively bricked without you lol

lucid burrow
#

all good ✌️

rotund remnant
#

so what's the solution? having this same problem in linux for years

fierce surge
#

not quite the solution that i was looking for but it works so long as you're fine with it not being an application

rotund remnant
#

good to know, so then we can assume it had something to do with configs?

fierce surge
#

Can’t really pinpoint it for certain tho
