I think "within 3 days" actually means "more than 24 hours, less than 72 hours".

So if someone's an hour later doing sleep research than they were the previous day, and if you check during that hour, it'll say "within 3 days".

I don't think it's a bug, so much as I think it's being commonly misinterpreted. "Within 3 days" means that, at some point in the past 3 days, you received research from them. "Within 1 day" is what we usually see, and that means you received research within the past 24 hours. Once you reach 24:01 without receiving anything, "within 1 day" is no longer true, and it says "within 3 days". So if they sleep in one day and are late to send research, and if you check at that moment, you'll see "within 3 days".
