They both had 3 because you had fed a larvitar earlier
What does happen is that over hearting doesn't carry over, so the extra 1 from the bonus biscut doesn't do anything

Yup, I fed them both during previous sessions which is why they showed up during todays session at 3/5 hearts or fullness meter not sure the exact terminology lol. I fed 1 the bonus biscuit and knew that the extra 1 would disappear, had no issue with that. What I didn’t know is that larvitar #2 that I hadn’t fed this current session, also with 3/5 hearts, would reset back to 0. Definitely makes getting dupes to increase friendship level way more difficult as a f2p player

You misunderstand.
You fed a single Larvitar to make it 3/5. If 2 later show up they will both show up as 3/5 as well
You can also see this if they both started at 0. Feeding one a bonus biscut would put both at 3
