SS14 account: Duran

Character name: Cas Alekseev

Type of Ban: Server Ban

Date of Ban and Duration: 2025-04-11 for 72 hours

Reason for Ban: Rule 0, don’t be a dick. Rule 8, negotiations must be attempted before boarding actions are started.

Your side of the story: I have recounted the events to the admins already, so I’ll leave out whats already known. There’s several key factors though, especially relating to the ban, that were left out however.

Boarding before negotiations: The pirate was docked to a public food ship, right beside the TO. This was no deep space operation carried out with tactical precision. My crew docked to the food ship, walked in, and met the pirate there. I myself was Eva at the time, and was not around for that part of things so can’t say what happened, but they met aboard the food ship and then moved the conversation over to the pirates ship. I did not board the pirate ship until the pirate, and my whole crew, was already on board their ship.

Ignoring our error: We had called the SR, and informed him that Gobbo was not here. We told him that there is no hard evidence of any crime committed save for C3, but that it was still Gobbos partner. We told him that we could either let him walk free, or bring him in. We were fully prepared to not bring this guy in, if that’s what was chosen, but we were told to carry out the arrest by the SR, and did so.

They wanted to sell and cryo: They never once stated that they wanted to cryo until they were at the NFSD and were in the SR’s hands. When they had said they wanted to cryo, they were allowed to do so. If when we had initially boarded he said he just wanted to sell and cryo things would have looked very different. In LOOC he said he wanted to sell his diamonds before going to the NFSD, as he believed they were going to steal his legal goods, but we told him that they can’t just steal legal goods from him, and he’d be fine to sell them after. There was zero holding someone’s end of shift hostage, as he made zero implications of wanting to end his shift until he was out of our hands.

Ensure our own payout: After the arrest was carried out, not once did we demand pay. When the SR even talked about the possibility of not paying for it, no one on our crew protested. And as I said earlier, we were prepared to let this guy walk in the first place, no arrests. To say that it was all done to ensure our own payout seems harsh. We acted as instructed by frontier command.

Why you think you should be unbanned/have ban reduced: The above information was missed during the initial explanation of events and review by admins, leading to the belief of an unnecessarily harsh and brutal encounter. This was not a wordless boarding followed by us ignoring all requests to go cryo. This was a meeting, at a public food place, with no talk of cryoing discussed.

Extra Notes: Two extra things that are relevant to this case.

First off, the pirates total lack of willingness to talk anything through irp. Immediately going to LOOC about how NFSD was going to rule break and rob him, and just complaining about how he was going to be broke, despite our countless reassurances that it wouldn’t be like that, made things extremely hard to work with or figure out what could have everyone happy. We weren’t able to talk to him, and just had complaints. Even after LOOC was disabled, he just continued to LOOC complain through irp. He was offered court, to sue. He was offered to depo cash when he made it to NFSD. He was offered to sell after his quick time in prison. He didn’t reply to anything we said, and continued to explain and insult us. To ban me for ‘kidnapping his end of shift’ when all he did was insult and complain and refused to speak is extremely frustrating. He was a total dick in this situation out of character, we had tried our best to work with him and find a middle ground.

Second off, was that I was extremely uninvolved with this. During the initial boarding, I was not there. Initial negotiations, I was not there. Once we knew he wasn’t shooting us up, I was on the phone with the SR, I was not there. I was there for a moment after that, telling him that we had been ordered to bring him in, and dealing with his arguing. Then I was flying his ship, on the SR’s order, to NFSDO. And then the SR and my crew mate talked, presenting all the evidence, again something I was uninvolved. And then he was handed over to the SR. During this entire process, I interacted with him when I told him and the crew what was ordered, and at the very end when he was handed over. Otherwise? I was not around for it. Maybe he did say he wanted to go cryo right away when we first met him. Maybe he said that while he was in a cell. But I wasn’t there. Extremely frustrating to be banned for something that I was not directly part of most of it.

Hello @lapis wren, I will be taking this appeal.
Information has become somewhat scattered, so I can ensure no ones side of the story is being left out can you tell me everyone you know was involved in this situation?
I already know who the pirate was but you mentioned the SR and a crew of indeterminate size?

Hey, I just saw this - I was involved in this whole thing as the SR who had posted a bounty and authorized the hunting of a prior pirate. Our agreement was for the capture of Gobbo Supreme who had been causing trouble earlier in the round, but went to cryo before Cas's crew could do much. So a good while later i receive a call from Cas something along the lines of 'we have this other guy, you want us to bring him in instead or let him walk free?' (you'll have to double check the exact phrasing used as i cant quite remember!) - from the call, I got the impression they had already detained the guy and were asking if they should bring him to me or release him. I wasn't particularly thrilled with this as our agreement was for someone completely different, but being under the assumption that the damage was already done and he was currently in cuffs, I gave the go ahead to bring him in so I could sort it out and do damage control. As it turns out, the mercs had in fact NOT captured the pirate at the time of the call, and were intending to ask if they should do so in the first place, to which I had unintentionally given them the green light. Thus, the whole situation seems to have ultimately stemmed from a communication breakdown between Cas and myself; Though the merc team was very brash in their maneuver, I don't believe the blame should all be put on Duran for this one.

Papers explained quite well how it went down. Our team felt it was wrong to bring him in, and even discussed among ourself that “it was up to the courts to decide”, but ultimately acted as instructed by frontier commands authorities. And then Papers acted off what he had, assuming us to have cuffed and already detained this pirate, and not just having him cornered. Really just a normal SS14 miscommunication which has lead to a ban, which is quite unfortunate.
