Date of Ban and Duration: 05/02/2025

Reason for Ban:
The ban reason is: "Safezone violation.

Broke into the frontier station security and mail room and stole various items mainly security. This was after the player was talked to about server rules when they inquired. Due to them disregarding the server rules a 1 day ban will be applied."
This ban is for 1,440 minutes and will expire at Thursday, February 6, 2025 6:33 PM UTC.

Your side of the story: I had previously IC been shown that this was a thing that I could do, and am roleplaying a character that does legally blurry/streetpunk actions. During my ahelp I had even used the IC acts of another character that taught me various, harmless and legally blurry tactics as an example of I was unsure of was ok. The admin in question assured me that harmless shenanigans was allowed. As far as I can tell, what I did is as light a crime as I possibly could have done, and could have easily led to some roleplay interactions with Sec. During the ahelp (that happened during a previous round in a different context), I was told explicitly PvP theft (especially on ships) was banned, but that did not say that institutional theft was banned. When I broke into the mail room, I did not take anything, and when I broke into security, I took a few items left on the floor. I did not destroy the doors or any equipment.

Why you think you should be unbanned/have ban reduced:
I broke in using a multitool and replaced the panels afterwards. The frontier safe zone rules explicitly do not say a single thing about breaking and entry or theft of non critical equipment. I did not steal any ships or destroy any equipment or infrastructure. What I did was not against the rules as documented on the rules page. I think at the very least a ban (even a short one) is harsh for this interaction, as the claim of prior warning is incorrect.

So we've recently had a rules update, but this was prior to your ban. I think you'll be interested in this particular section under the safezone rules:

  • Do not destroy, modify, remove, or restrict the use of any machine or device designed for public use on Frontier Outpost.

This includes hacking or sabotaging airlocks.

Yeah I've noticed that and have requested for it to be corrected, however it is correct in the in-game rulebook.

I will say though, I still think my other points stand. Even if what I did was against the rules (and I'm sorry if that's the case), It was taught as an IC thing to do, and the ahelp did not address those points at all so I don't see why it's being used for evidence against me, as if anything it should be used as evidence for me. With the character who taught me that act in question being allowed to get away with it

Regardless - as per the safezone rules, zero antagonistic activity is allowed within the safezone, which includes breaking and entering into areas you do not have access to.

fair, I won't do it again in the future then. I feel a ban is still harsh for this interaction.

We take the protection of the safezone very seriously and this ban length is not unusual for such things.
When you play on the server, you agree to play by the server rules regardless of what other players tell you. If other players are telling you that you can break those rules, then you should be ahelping them!

Out of interest, how was I banned for this hours after the incident happened? If I was witnessed by an admin during the act, why was I not warned or talked to via ahelp? Again, it feels very harsh for a first offense of a relatively minor act. And also what is the role of security on FO if not to stop things like that explicitly?

Also will this effect any future whitelisting I may apply for?

I've read through the ahelp in question, and the admin handling it said that you can perform minor crimes with a roleplayable reason. Capital crimes are not to be committed by non antags.

The safezone is the major exception to this - you should know (hopefully having read the rules), and it says this in big bold letters at the start of the safezone rules:
Frontier Outpost and the 200 meter radius around it is considered a safe zone. Absolutely no antag activity or griefing is permitted within that zone.

So yeah, while non-capital crimes are permitted within the space of good roleplay reasons, there is to be no crime in the safe zone. Ever.
