#UK - Disabled man dies in poverty and squalor after DWP removes his benefits, just as Labour cuts PIP by £4.5bn

The body of a disabled man was found in his flat in distressing, squalid conditions, just weeks after the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) wrongly removed his disability benefits because he had failed to return a claim form. disabilitynewsservice.com/disa… #brexit #poverty #squalor #austerity #ukpolitics #politicsuk #labour #ukgovernment

Disabled people deserve the right to live within their communities, as independently as possible.

They often need support in order to do that, which was provided by the Administration for Community Living.

Shutting it down will likely lead to more people being institutionalized & losing autonomy

Julia Métraux (@metrauxjulia.bsky.social)
The Administration for Community Living, housed in HHS, is shutting down. I spoke to disability experts for @motherjones.com about questions they have for what’s next, the services ACL provides, and how this move may lead to more folks being institutionalized. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Oh, Muskie, my sweet. Yes, we do want to destroy your "influence" (= complete control), because we believe in democracy. Where ordinary people (remember them?) have a say.

And no, the "Nazi stuff" isn't fake. We saw you, light of my life, heart of my heart's desiring, we *saw* you make a Nazi salute. We *know* you enabled a fascist president, and spent $400 million to get him elected. We *know* you supported the neo-nazi AfD in Germany.

*You* are the evil one.

Now, this, this is the way to defeat an autocrat: flocking behaviour. Rutgers University Senate has called for the Big 10 academic institutions to create a joint defence fund and make resources available to any member institution under attack.

That link's below. But for a précis of why and how this shit can actually work, here's a piece I wrote during Trump's first term:

The eVisa scheme (UK) has proved chaotic.

Travellers stranded at airports, refugees unable to rent a home or get a job, and a man being made homeless – these are some of the horror stories we have heard since the Home Office’s eVisa scheme came into effect.

But there's a simple solution to this mess: allow physical proof of immigration status.

Over the past several years, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has quietly built out an expansive surveillance apparatus—one that’s increasingly powered by artificial intelligence. Many of these technology acquisitions have been made under the auspices of Governor Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, an $11 billion program that has supercharged the state’s decades-long border militarization. texasobserver.org/texas-dps-su…

DPS records obtained and reviewed by the Texas Observer in recent months shed new light on the scope of the state police’s surveillance toolbox. The agency has spent millions acquiring an array of powerful—and controversial—artificial intelligence software tools that can mine billions of images to provide facial recognition, track vehicle locations from automatic license plate readers, monitor phone conversations of inmates in Texas prisons and jails, break into and search for data evidence from seized cell phones and computers, and even t…

I know people who grew up on the US Border in Vancouver in the 60s and 70s. The border was a ditch they could walk or ride across as kids and go to the corner store. Those days ended years ago, but they are almost unthinkable now.

The warnings from Canada on travel to the US are frankly deeply shocking.

“The federal government updated its travel advisory on Friday, warning Canadians of possible detention should one be denied entry to the United States.
“Comply and be forthcoming in all interactions with border authorities,” reads the advisory. “If you are denied entry, you could be detained while awaiting deportation.”
The government also warned that travellers should expect to be heavily questioned and may have their electronic devices searched.

“Individual border agents often have significant discretion in making those determinations,” the advisory reads. “U.S. authorities strictly enforce entry requirements. Expect scrutiny at ports of entry, including…

In an article about autism, he talks about how autistic people will never pay taxes, hold a job, go on a date etc. “worthless”. Useless eaters.

This is straight up eugenics.

Elon Musk DMed a woman on X named Tiffany Fong — a conservative crypto influencer — asking if she would have his child. She declined and exposed the interaction to some of her friends.

My mom was a primary school teacher in the latter half of the last century. During book-banning debates at her school system in the 1980s — over Dungeons & Dragons themed books, of course; Satanic Panic was in full swing — a speaker who’d been brought in by the banning side said that schools shouldn’t be allowed to teach critical thinking skills because if you needed a thought, God would give it to you. There was much agreement from the audience, she said.

I think about that a lot these days.

🚨 ATTENTION: NSF GRANT RECIPIENTS

From a trusted source: We received a heads up that you should proactively download/print/screen shot any documentation on research.gov pertaining to your NSF awards, both those that are current and any that have closed in the last 5-6 years.

There is credible evidence that such things are being planned for removal, and that their absence would then be used to justify punitive actions, such as terminations or future penalties. 1/n

When I finally had the surgery, I had a severe post operative complication. The surgeon didn’t believe me. She sent me home.

I had to go to the ER four times before they found the life threatening internal bleed. Each time dismissing me as “attention seeking” or accusing me of not understanding some pain was to be expected.

Noting Rowling’s vast financial success, Barker felt that Rowling’s newfound position of fame ought to exclude her from discussing trans rights. He added, “It really just seems redundant for a woman as successful, as validated in the world, as Ms Rowling, to be negative, to be disruptive if you will, to a very beaten up subculture. These are human beings. She has no right to opine, I think, upon the lives of human beings that she does not know.”

“I feel very protective of people who are on the edge of our culture as gay people still are,” Barker continued. “And certainly transgender people are on the edge of our culture. And here you have one of the most successful people in the frigging world – Ms Rowling. Going after a very emotionally vulnerable portion of our culture. It just seems unnecessary and unfair.”

We were traveling out of Barcelona when the #SpainBlackout hit. We were actually waiting in line for the train. Power went out and cell service cut around noon. Just read an article from an #ai influencer musing on the Innovative power of AI.

Tasked with breaking the Enigma code, an AI system trained to recognise German using Grimm’s fairytales, utilizing 2,000 virtual servers, cracked a coded message in 13 minutes.

Let's pause for a second to let it sink.

And let's think for a second

Alan Turing “Bombes” could decipher two messages every minute.

😱. Suddenly the AI result isn't all that impressive any more.
AI cuts out all the research, knowledge gain, and insight. With all the resources available today, it still performs worse than a solution from 70 years ago (to be precise 26 times).
And this is seen as an impressive innovation 🤡🤯

Yes, It Is Just Like The Nazis
Hey so remember Anne Frank? The Jewish young girl who hid in an attic and was killed by the Nazis? The emblematic person we think of when we think of victims of the Holocaust?

She did not die in a gas chamber or in a death camp. She died in a temporary' detention center for the mass deportations which preceded the death camps.
She was in that camp because a patriotic neighbor ratted her out to the German deportation force. She died, not of a bullet to the back of the head or choking on gas, but of typhus. She contracted typhus because the Nazis couldn't realistically deport people at the rate they wanted to, because before the death camps their infrastructure couldn't handle the sudden influx of ethnic minorities they had decided to imprison, and because they didn't care about the consequences of that so their deportation detention centers were unhygienic and prisoners were underfed and overcrowded.

And she was picked up by the deportation force no…

I've been part of a Stanford adolescent brain development study since I was a kid - 8 years of my life contributing to science. Yesterday I saw firsthand how Trump's authoritarian bullshit is literally erasing scientific knowledge.

For years, this study included questions about gender identity - because, you know, that's actually relevant to understanding how adolescents develop. This year? Completely gone.

The researchers explained that Trump didn't just gut NIH funding - he made it illegal for any federally-funded research to even mention gender identity. They can't use the word "gender" at all. Only "sex" with binary options.

I watched these scientists - people I've known for years, who've dedicated their lives to understanding human development - have to explain how politicians are literally censoring their research. They called it "awful" but they had no choice: c…

Folks in NZ are starting to realise the implications of the impending EOL of Microsoft Windows 10 for our education system. In its finite wisdom, our MinOfEd has effectively locked all schools into either the use of MS Windows or Google ChromeOS. Don’t let them shift the narrative; don’t let the “anarchists” (armchair or otherwise) or the antagonists make it seem as if the people as a whole are violent. #LosAngeles will be fine.

Here are the 8 new members of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), who have replaced the 17 members fired on Monday by HHS Sec. RFK Jr.

As expected, many of them are anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers, who have made a living trashing vaccines and scientists, and peddling quack treatments.

I watched the parade in all its glory so you don’t have to.
(abc coverage on YouTube)

How bizarre.

It started with what appeared to be a military museum presentation of historical military uniforms.

The fashion show commentary over the loudspeakers was definitely a thing.

If Trump was going for something similar to one of those parades in Moscow or Pyongyang, I’m not sure he hit the mark. For one thing, no flag-waving crowds lining the parade. It looked like a double barricade and a line of police blocking what crowds did show up.

Most participants marching or driving down the street look… ashamed, or disappointed, to be there. It has more of an ancient world feel of a defeated army being paraded before the victor.

The tank parade was a bit more ominous, accompanied by some instrumental guitar rock music.

It didn’t look like many people showed up, with a lot of the shots showing empty space on both sides of the street. When they showed the people who…

In the end, we completely overshadowed Trump's parade this weekend but it wasn't cheap.

We had perhaps 2000 protests, the big ones drawing 10,000 plus. Most went off without a hitch, but a few had some very ugly incidents:

The first did not occur at a protest, but was used as a failed excuse to ask people to stay home. This was the shooting of two Dem politicians AND their spouses by a presumed right winger.

Then there is the report of at least one person shot at a Salt Lake City (NOT Las Vegas) No Kings protest, possibly an attempted mass shooting.

In Culpeper, VA someone deliberately accelerated an SUV into the crowd, somehow with no reports of injuries

These three incidents stand out as heavy civil war crap. Then there were the lesser incidents, this is only the ones I am aware of:

Tampa caught a break: a MAGA meathead brandished a gun at protesters but thought it through and did not fire at our people. Someone called the…

Democratic Assemblyman #Zohran #Mamdani’s mayoral primary victory in New York City
has prompted an #elite #panic, the likes of which we’ve rarely seen:
Billionaires are desperately seeking a general-election candidate to stop him,
former Barack Obama aides are publicly melting down,
corporate moguls are threatening a capital strike,
and CNBC has become a television forum for nervous breakdowns.
Meanwhile, Democratic elites who’ve spent a decade punching left are suddenly trying to align themselves with and take credit for Mamdani’s brand
(though not necessarily his agenda).
On the surface, this freak-out can seem as if it’s about policy.
Mamdani’s proposals for
free buses,
universal free child care,
faster small-business licensing,
higher taxes on the rich,
some publicly owned grocery stores,
a higher minimum wage,
and rent freezes
are indeed shocking to oligarchs conditioned to getting everything they want.

r/agb: If you're trans, you should go find bisexuals. Leave us alone.

r/bisexual: Woohoo! Best of both worlds!

#

this honestly feels like a pretty accurate description of those three subreddits

#

Also, not aimed at you, obviously, but speaking to the broader (cis) crowd here:

People can sleep with, or not sleep with, whoever they want, but I do think a lot of cis lesbians should really examine where their genital preference comes from and what underlying beliefs and societal background motivates it.

I can't help but shake the feeling that "genital preference" is too often the end product of starting at "trans women are gross, disgusting, ugly men" and working backwards from there, whether the latter belief is one that the holder would openly endorse or is even fully conscious of. Implicit bias is a hell of a drug.

It's saying "I have a preference for the features of [more dominant social group], of which I am a part, because I have been told that these features are more desirable and moral, and that's completely valid and I won't question it"

And also, "penis means man and I will not disentangle these concepts in my head"

I do not even want to be romantically or sexually involved with cis lesbians.

I am T4T precisely because I don't want to deal with having to coach a cis person into seeing me as a human being, let alone as a woman.

this feels pretty close to my position on "genital preference"

This NYT quote about “AI” in 80s Pac-Man is comically bad.

But rather than dwelling on that, the way the ghosts work to make it feel like they were “thinking” is a really cool example of the exact opposite. It's a series of really simple deterministic rules:

web.archive.org/web/2019110702…

Take a few things happening in parallel in a highly specified way, throw in a little randomness (no more complicated than rolling dice), and we start assigning agency to the ghosts in the game.

This happens because 1) our brains love to anthropomorphize, and 2) we don't perceive the rules immediately.

And that's today's AI in a nutshell… More simple rules, more rolling dice—just massively scaled up!

Now you can do 10,000x more in the same time, so the result is again indistinguishable from magic, and we trick ourselves into assigning agency and even “intelligence” to the outputs.

A M8.8 earthquake just ruptured the subduction zone offshore Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula. This is one of the world’s truly huge earthquakes, and a triggered tsunami is currently traveling across the Pacific ocean.

This same fault ruptured on July 20th in a M7.4, and last August in a M7.1. We wrote about those earthquakes, wondering: should they be considered warnings of elevated risk? We didn't have a good answer then, and we still don't.

OMG THE 51ST STREET SHOOTER KILLED BLACKSTONE’s CEO OF REIT?!?!?

Blackstone are backed by the Saudis and one of their missions is to make it impossible for Americans to own a home. with the Saudi money they’ve been buying up whole communities and towns. one of their CEOs is the guy pushing the neofeudalism of “nobody will own anything” but the capitalists.

no wonder the shooter was very specific.

The war on uterus owners is in full swing, with abortion bans and forced birth policies causing a significant increase in maternal and infant mortality.

A woman in Tennessee was denied pre natal care for being unwed.

The Trump regime just announced it would incinerate $10 million in oral contraceptives rather than provide them to those in need, and Republicans are trying to pass a law banning women from flushing their miscarriages.

A woman in South Carolina was recently arrested for a miscarriage because she placed the fetal remains in the garbage. The hospital called child protective services on her.

My latest talks about my own battle with bodily autonomy and why I think things have become more worse:

So ICE raided a construction site in our neighborhood and two of the workers tried to get away. They got in their truck, hit one of the ICE vehicles and drove off. The ICE officers *opened fire* on them. They abandoned their vehicle in the neighborhood to try to escape on foot. So now we’re all ordered to “shelter in place” and “stay away from windows” so the swarming gestapo can shoot up the place with a free hand.

"A 2023 study found that a single Chat GPT-3 request processed at an Arizona data center uses about 30 milliliters of water, compared to 12 ml per request in Wyoming. That doesn’t seem like much (it’s less than a shot-glass) until you consider that there are at least 1 billion ChatGPT queries worldwide per day and growing, using a total of some 8 million gallons of water daily, worldwide."

There is a long tradition of breaking specific laws to show that the Rule of Law (in its normative sense) is being compromised by non-sensical laws - such civil disobedience has a well-established pedigree.

As arrests of those breaking the proscription of Palestine Action, by holding placards silently, exceeds a thousand, I think we can safely say Labour is now confronting mass civil disobedience; if they know their history they'll know they are likely on the wrong side of this!

Something clicked for me yesterday. I read about #RFKJr 's latest claim that #Tylenol causes #autism when used during #pregnancy , and I thought:

"Hey, I have read something very similar in a German #folklore text!"

And here you have it:

"If a mother uses a spell in order to ease her birth, then the Evil Enemy tries to lure these children in particular. Thanks to this magical influence, such children - if female - are born with the drive to trude. But male children are driven to theft (the 'Bilwez Cut!')."

"Truding" in this context means becoming a "night hag"-type spirit while sleeping who torments and squeezes other spirits (the "sleep paralysis" phenomenon) while the "Bilwez Cut" is the ability to magically cut down the ripe grain fields of others and steal the grain without spotting you. You can read the entire text at the link - though beware, it's full of ableist nonsense.

But now I am intrigued - both in JFKJr's modern claims (and presumably his fellow c…

A handful of users on mastodon shared this post already:

i want to quote GNOME here:
We can’t afford to stay silent in times when history is literally being erased, and fundamental human rights are being revoked. Silence is complicity. We will not falter at this attempt to divide queer communities. We also encourage everyone to be as outspoken as they can be.

Never forget: We are stronger together.

In light of these circumstances it is especially encouraging to see the community of queer contributors growing steadily. We are here and we are not going anywhere - the GNOME community is and will always stand with queer people. We’ve got your back.

A decades-long peace vigil outside the White House is dismantled after Trump’s order. The vigil was launched by activist William Thomas as an anti-nuclear weapons protest outside the White House in Lafayette Square, Washington, D.C. on June 3, 1981

Law enforcement officials on Sunday removed a peace vigil that had stood outside the White House for more than four decades after President Donald Trump ordered it to be taken down

Philipos Melaku-Bello, a volunteer who has manned the vigil for years, told The Associated Press that the Park Police removed it early Sunday morning. He said officials justified the removal by mislabeling the memorial as a shelter. #USPol

Have you ever heard a Shahed drone?

Here's the sound millions of Ukrainians hear every day & night: the moped-like buzz growing louder, circling above, the terrifying wait before final explosion. Families hide in corridors, bathrooms, shelters, holding their breath.

Ukraine’s Harmoniia Orchestra has turned this into music, creating an overture that imitates a Russian Shahed drone attack. It captures the fear, buzzing & bursts of explosions as air defense shoots it down.

Ali Nasrati discovered, after receiving a barrage of abuse and death threats and being suspended from work, that an X account started in May was using his name and a photo stolen from his social media. "Over 200,000 people think that I'm somebody that I'm not," Nastrati told Lorenz, referring to the amount of views one of the X posts attacking him received. "I don't know if anybody's following me. My study of old #folklore gets more and more relevant to current-day affairs.

Example: All of these narratives about "Things That Cause #Autism " are basically recycled folk tales about #changelings .

Right now, we are at the: "The child is WRONG somehow - the mother must have been careless!" stage.

And it's only a very small step to: "My child is WRONG somehow! Thus, I must abuse it until I get my REAL child back - the one I always wanted!"

The context changes, but the underlying narratives stay the same.

@jade dew saw this one you can relate https://meow.social/@drmaddkap/115429747006063459

Occasionally, a student asks me why being transgender is not considered a mental disorder. I can give you the scientific and diagnostic reasons why not. But I’ll usually answer the following way instead.

Because people who are transgender have shit figured out a hell of a lot better than most other people.

Think about that for a minute. Individuals who are transgender have gone through the long and painful process of self exploration to figure out why they don’t feel right. And after all of that, they came to the conclusion that their biological body is mismatched to who they really are.

Tell me anyone else that has gone through that much introspection that much study that much thought to figure out how they can live in a way that makes them happy. And they recognized that by making the choice that will make them feel happy, they’re gonna have to deal with social stigma, bigotry, and violence every single day.

Compare that to your garden variety bigot who gets angry…

The Alberta #UCP has just blown up a century of labour action and worker’s rights hard won against coercive and exploitative employers. They - the employer - have just unilaterally imposed a contract on teachers in clear contravention of their constitutional and Charter rights, and have invoked the “notwithstanding” clause to shield themselves from legal consequences.

A summary of the act:

Here are the 20 key takeaways from Alberta’s 2025 Back to School Act (Bill 2) — the highlights that matter most for understanding what this law does:
    •    Ends the Alberta teachers’ strike that began Oct 6, 2025, and the lockout by TEBA that began Oct 9, 2025.
    •    Forces all teachers back to work immediately — strike must end at once.
    •    Forces TEBA and school boards to end any lockout immediately.

#ABPoli #CdnPoli #Solidarity #WorkerRights #Dictators

-# ↩ David Mitchell :CApride:
    •    Makes it illegal to strike or lock out at all going forward for the duration of the Act.
    •    Imposes a mandatory collective agreement — teachers do not get to vote on ratification.
    •    The agreement is retroactive to Sept 1, 2024 and will run until Aug 31, 2028.
    •    The terms are taken from the recommended bargaining proposal signed Sept 23, 2025.
    •    The Act applies to all Alberta teachers, school boards, the ATA, and TEBA.
    •    The Act overrides the Canadian Charter (sections 2 & 7–15), the Alberta Bill of Rights, and the AB Human Rights Act via notwithstanding clause.
    •    It explicitly blocks any court or tribunal from challenging its constitutionality. Judges and arbitrators are not allowed to even look at it.
    •    Anyone violating the strike/lockout ban faces fines up to $500 (individuals) or $500,000 (organizations\…

    •    No one can sue the government or seek damages of any kind for anything done under this Act — past, present or future.
    •    Teachers’ salary grids will get 3% increases in 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027
    •    Substitute teachers’ daily rate rises to $271/day Sept 1 2025, then increases further in later years.
    •    1000 new teachers per year will be hired province-wide in 2025–26, 2026–27, and 2027–28 to address classroom complexity.
    •    Northern & remote allowances are created — up to $6,300 per year depending on school location.
    •    Government also commits to hiring 1500 new Educational Assistants by Aug 31 2028.
    •    Teachers retain access to COVID-19 vaccinations at no cost, facilitated by the government.

Oh look, another rich, white billionaire saying #climatechange isn’t so bad

cnn.com/2025/10/28/business/bi…

What does Microsoft need from the US Government, Bill? I know you’re not CEO any more, but this reeks of the same fucked up bullshittery we saw Tim Apple do at the White House.

OH, and congratulations on the shitty timing. You know, just as #Jamaica faces the largest storm in its history….

And look, the crux of what he’s saying is “ tackle hunger, and disease” but if you don’t tackle climate change as well, those other things will get WORSE. This isn't an 'either, or' situation.

We have to tackle anthropogenic climate change. We have to tackle hunger. And we have to tackle disease. We can't do just one. We have to do all of them, and that means... changing how we deal with world wealth.

Tax the rich. Build a society where all have a chance to thrive… not just a few.

If someone complains that a software I recommended is "woke", I ask them "what does that mean? Can you say more about that?"

My tactic is to make them say what they mean. They won't.

Wanna know something extremely creepy?

Further investigation revealed it was the border control guy who checked her passport at the airport.

"The Japanese government and some of the nation's top manufacturers have warned Vietnam that a planned ban on petrol-powered motorbikes in Hanoi could spark job losses and disrupt a $4.6 billion market that is dominated by Honda.

Honda controls 80% of the two-wheeler market in Vietnam.

Meanwhile, sales of electric motorbikes and e-bikes made by Vietnamese firm VinFast rose 55% to nearly 70,000 in the second quarter of 2025 from the first quarter."

My heart is so heavy … I lost a friend and mentor yesterday and the disability community lost a leader.

The incomparable Alice Wong passed away.

She inspired me to find my voice. She encouraged me to take up space and embrace my disabled body.

To be visible in a world that seeks to make us invisible.

To be unapologetic about the ways I am different and the things I need to move through this world.

To be a voice for those who don’t have one and to always fight against ableism and eugenics.

I can’t believe she’s gone.

The Disabled Ginger wouldn’t exist without her, and I hope that I can honour her memory through my writing.

Hug your loved ones close.

Remember none of us are guaranteed a tomorrow and may we all be as visible, proud and fierce as Alice was.…

Orlando Sentinel: Sanford grandfather, born in refugee camp, nabbed by ICE after 70 years in U.S.

"...Paul John Bojerski was born to Polish parents in a German refugee camp a year after World War II ended. His family legally emigrated to the United States in 1952 when he was five.

More than seven decades later, the 79-year-old Sanford grandfather – still a man without a country – found himself in legal limbo in the Alligator Alcatraz detention camp in the Everglades, picked up on a decades-old deportation order authorities had previously chosen not to enforce...."

Speaking of "Broken by design", let's talk about BMW.

Maybe 20 years ago, a mechanic friend of mine was outraged to learn that one of his customers' brand-new 3-series was upgradable. You buy a 318 and convert it to a 320, or something. Very cool. But the way it worked was the mechanics would replace some of the bodywork trim, replace the badge on the back, and then replace some of the engine-control software.

See, the cheap slow car and the expensive powerful car were the exact same car. Same big engine, same structure, but the cheap one was artificially detuned to be slower and worse and given slightly uglier mouldings.

This offended his engineering instincts. "I don't understand why you would go to university, get a mechanical engineering degree, design something and then sell it with the handbrake welded on and then charge people more money to remove it." And while I understand the business and marketing logic, I too am offended by the thought of actually making a p…

Want to know what climate change will look like?

The drought in Tehran has gotten so bad that people are seriously talking about evacuating the city!

"Tehran — the richest city of Iran, the most politically powerful city with more than 15 million in the metropolitan — is facing day zero in a few days or a few weeks," said Kaveh Madani, director of the United Nations University's Institute for Water, Environment and Health.

"Day zero" means NO WATER.

All of Iran is in a drought — the worst in nearly 60 years. Tehran has had no rain at all since the start of September, and no rainfall is expected for the foreseeable future.

The city depends on five major reservoirs for its water: Lar, Latyan, Amir Kabir, Mamlu and Talegan. Lar Dam is at only 2% of its capacity, while Latyan is 9% full. Amir Kabir, one of the most important dams for Tehran, is 11% full. Mamlu reservoir is only 1% full. Only Taleqan remains above one-third.

Right now the incompetent government is…

Dear Fedi friends.

As some of you may know, I have a wonderful daughter Lila who had a severe form of epilepsy at the age of 5 months. This epilepsy is called West Syndrome.

We had to go through a hell of a treatment to stop her seizures. The thing that helped her was called "Synacthene Retard". It's basically ACTH, a synthetic hormone similar to adrenocorticotropic hormone produced by our anterior pituitary gland.

My daughter was one of the last kids who had a chance to get the Synacthene Retard from the lab that produced it (Alpha Sigma). This was late March 2024. And in May 2024 Alpha Sigma said they discontinued this product without ANY public explanation.

I am trying to inquire about the disappearance of Synacthene Retard from French pharmacies. I am looking for contacts of a medical journalist or an expert in pharmaceutics to help me lead this investigation. It may save lives of dozens of other kids with that suffer from West Syndrome. Thank you!

"The findings were surprising. Instead of degrading the fragile desert, the solar panels appeared to be giving it new life.

From wasteland to microclimate

One of the most remarkable discoveries was the improvement in soil health and overall ecological vitality beneath the panels:
• Areas directly under the panels scored 0.4393 for “general” ecological health.
• Transitional zones between the panels and the open desert rated lower, at 0.2858.
• The untouched desert surrounding the site had the weakest score—0.2802.

The reason? The panels provide constant shade, trapping moisture, lowering ground temperatures, and reducing evaporation. In dry regions where water is scarce, even small shifts in these factors can spark major changes—encouraging plant growth and supporting microscopic organisms vital for fertile soil."

Billionaires with $1 salaries
– and other legal tax dodges the ultrawealthy use to keep their riches

Billionaires can enjoy growing wealth entirely free of income tax and reporting

Mark Zuckerberg was the lowest-paid employee at Meta in 2024,
and he made US$1.

But he is not the only very rich person who has collected $1 for a year’s work.

Why would incredibly rich CEOs make only $1 a year when they could pay themselves millions?

The reason is taxes.

Income from work is the most heavily taxed type of income,
as it is subject to both income and payroll taxes.

A self-employed person who makes a modest income of $60,000 will pay over $13,000 of it in payroll and income taxes.

Meanwhile, high-income earners who earn a $400,000 salary can pay about 30% of their income in payroll and income taxes.…

All cops are bastards because when Jonathan Ross murdered Renee Good by shooting her three times in the head, none of the cops present tried to stop him or apprehended him, and because those same cops made sure that doctors could not treat Good before she died, and because cops have helped Ross hide rather than hunting him down and arresting him for murder, and because cops around the country haven’t spoken out to demand the arrest of this fugitive murderer because they think he did the right and justified thing, because all cops are bastards.

TIL: The earliest use of the word "terrorism" identified by the Oxford English Dictionary is a 1795 reference to tyrannical state behavior, the "reign of terrorism" in France."

The term was coined to describe the actions of the state during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror, where agents of the Committee of Public Safety, referred to as "Terrorists," enforced the government's policies with violence against perceived enemies.

So, rather than watch the rest of the performers bow out of gigs, he's just going to close it down for construction? Can't wait to see what he does with the place. From WaPo:

"Trump plans to close Kennedy Center for about two years, starting in July. Under the proposal, the Kennedy Center could close on July 4, coinciding with America’s 250th anniversary."

“I have determined that The Trump Kennedy Center, if temporarily closed for Construction, Revitalization, and Complete Rebuilding, can be, without question, the finest Performing Arts Facility of its kind, anywhere in the World,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “In other words, if we don’t close, the quality of Construction will not be nearly as good, and the time to completion, because of interruptions with Audiences from the many Events using the Facility, will be much longer. The temporary closure will produce a much faster and higher quality result!”

So many things about right wing ideology that seemed inexplicable to me become understandable as the #EpsteinFiles get released.

15 years ago, no one cared about #trans people. They were free to lead their boring lives. Then kind of all at once, demagogues around the world became actively anti-trans, spouting rhetoric and pushing legislation. "Why now?" I wondered then and to this day.

Because Jeffrey Epstein was anti-trans. He asked his friends to take up the mantle and of course they did. The wave of anti-trans sentiment we suffer through today is because people wanted to suck up to a rich pedophile. No deeper conviction than that, no coherent philosophy. Epstein said so and thus it was.

He is no longer around to ask but I can only assume his motivation was because while sexually abusing teenaged girls Epstein did not want to be surprised by a penis. This whole moral panic is because of the sexual abuse preferences of one billiona…

I really appreciate the folks at @privacyguides talking about trans people when discussing real-name policies.

For people like me who cannot legally change our names or genders at all (🇭🇺), a real-name policy is effectively a perma-ban from a platform.

I'd never wish upon anyone the pain of searching "Is "legal name" required for [service]" and finding out that you either have to choose between not using it or having an anxiety-inducing panic-ridden terror-show slowly infest it. What to many is a mild annoyance to us is an impassable wall.

And now with age verification it has gotten even worse. How can I prove my age when my ID doesn't match my name? How can I even prove the account is mine? It's either deadname, or deletion.

It's cost me friendships, mutuals, the fun of using the internet... All that's left are the strongholds like Mastodon, built to resist these very policies. Besides them, where else could we go?

When I said that your discord clone doesn’t need e2ee, I got a lot of comments along the lines of “ then how would I use it to organize the revolution!” The answer is: you don’t. If you have more users than can comfortably share a Signal chat and hence want to use discord or something like it, you cannot POSSIBLY be vetting all of them to a high standard of trust. Your logs ARE leaking. End-to-end encryption between more people than can fit around a dinner table is pointless.

This article confirms what I already assumed, that “open source [information sense, not code sense] intelligence gathering on social media” includes, for the US government, asking for links to join groups that may *feel* private. My own discord has literally like a thousand idlers. It would be very *lucky* if none of them were logging for potentially nefarious purposes! And I remind the active users of this occasionally.
