Nerfing discards, I think is something the game doesn't need. It changes the gameplay too much, it wrecks the balance. It changes what hands are effective and jokers that are dependent on discards are also nerfed. In my opinion stakes should apply difficulty as purely as possible. In other words any nerfs to the player should be applied uniformly so as to keep stakes an issue of difficulty and not something like decks or challenges that fundamentally changes the game balance.

yeah early game sucks even harder with this. just kills your econ a good 80-90% of the time. currently, you can spend 1 hand instead of a discard and that's effectively losing $1 ONCE out of 3 effective discards

#

this is -1 on all 3 discards

#

you're better off just playing hands early game cuz they won't eat into interest at least and they'll score

Aside from stake effects that nerf discards being inherently flawed, this effect in itself has additional issues. Like trench pointed out, it breaks the hand discard economy. It also as katie pointed out disproportionately affects the early game. The argument that since you can use hands to discard, tiny hands are less promoted is additionally invalid. If you need to, as a consistent feature of your build, use hands, hands with scoring potential, as discards, you are better off using those hands for scoring. Why would I ever spend 3 hands to score 1 hand when I could just score 4 hands? If my main hand is high card because I am "discarding" with it, that is the hand I am going to upgrade. The only reason large hands have any prevalence is because discards, opportunities to dig through your deck that lack scoring potential, exist. There is deckfixing too of course, but discards are the gateway to using larger hands.

this also indirectly makes Burglar even better and the distance between red and blue decks' power larger (not only cuz discards are now bad to use, but also since Red goes from +50% Discards to +33% Discards (the latter is fine but this change REALLY makes it a huge discrepency))

Yeah, like I said, blue stake as of now and the proposed blue stake both mess a ton with the balance of the game.
