Alternatively could just be a fixed amount of money but I thought this would be more fun to play with and fits more dramatically with the theming.

Honestly, this is a good way to reward the risk of going for larger hands. But it might be a little too strong as is.
But the fact that it requires shortcut to trigger for straights is not ideal. But if you're running straights and not shortcut you're having a pretty tough time anyway.

Thats why I'm worried of it being a common; requiring not very good ranks in return for a vastly stronger econ isnt a bad tradeoff; but if you find this too often is it good enough to build your early-mid run off of? Entirely yes

Theming wise I went off of the 7-2 off suit starting hand in poker, considered to be statistically the worst but immensely fun if you manage to bluff your way through — hence the big payoff for this joker. I just removed the off suit requirement for sake of game balance as otherwise it would be borderline usable imo but the upshot is giving 7’s a viable use as a rank

Idk why people act like rarity isn't a huge balancing point tbh; alot of the times an idea could work at a higher or lower rarity; usually with but sometimes without stat changes

Idk if altering price is necessary for suggestions here. In most cases I think the price shouldn’t be taken into account for joker design. If the joker is well thought and balanced, only then figure out what to do with price
