#Making an ai model to mod balatro

i am using a LLM ai on my pc. though ollama and open webui, using qwen2.5 coder as my ai model. I am also using RAG to feed it balatro game files and a few mods. It actually succesfully made one mod that doubles your mult everytime it gets triggered. i didnt want that mod it was just somthing simle to test, but it actually worked. i then tried making a mod that i actually do want. It applies a negative edition to the first joker that appears in the shop. apperently that is still too complicated for my ai to make.

so long story short. i need some kind of database for my ai to pull off of to make mods for balatro

get the AI outta here

gaunt crater
#

yeah the difficulty with that is the language barrier

#

probably doesn't exactly know what applying negative edition to the first joker in the shop means, and it might not even be possible without lovely patching

#

if you isolate everything to calculate function it's incapable of doing complex stuff like that

#

Hard stop on feeding it content that isn't yours that you didn't ask for permission for, maybe that's just me

karmic sierra
#

in my opinion
useing AI to balatro is disrepsectfull

#

AI uses stolen assets to make stuff
in the end no one knows who should get credit

gaunt crater
#

i mean a good llm should only need balatro + smods dump to do stuff, everything else is either just for formatting or bait

#

does it know how lovely patching works

#

i assume it probably does know, but maybe there's confusion in what exactly is going on

#

especially so if there's other mods baiting it with patches exclusive to the mod itself

I really don’t think any modder is going to consent to using their mods for a ai database I’m gonna be real

#

I don’t want any project I’m affiliated with to go into this and I hope others feel the same

#

I don't recall you asking about using Steamodded like this, either

#

I legally can't stop you but this is a bad idea
-# so long as you aren't publishing it(?)

raw briar
#

I don’t think ethangreen consented to lovely either

#

Also in general AI generated projects I feel are good only for personal use and not public widespread as it’s not your work at the end of the day.

I'll be pretty upset if my code is a part of a published model and even moreso if it's a paid published model.

#

If this is just you messing around then I don't really care. I'll say that the lovely codebase itself won't help much.

#

As a software engineer I really dislike AI's use in development (and my wife is an artist so I dislike image gen AI even more), but at the end of the day it's MIT licensed so I can't really do anything about it.

i think an ai balatro mod generator is cool on paper but shouldnt be endorsed, maybe if you make the ai understand the code and teach you how to make your mods in a simple way then it would be endorsable because then its educational and at the end of the day you are the owner of the mod and made it with your own understanding but to generate the mod with no knoweldge is dumb, because if the mod doesnt work, then you dont know how to fix it, or why it doesnt work

#

worst thing about open source licenses is that it allows for things like this

#

none of us can do anything about it despite how morally depraved it is

#

well

stoic sphinx
#

I genuinely see no point in or interest in ai mods. Any and all effort required to make them work would be easier put to just making mods yourself

violet nest
stoic sphinx
#

Which is still incredibly important

#

It’s always important to directly oppose things like this. And not allow them to potentially grow in support

violet nest
#

ya

#

for what its worth i have a few lines of code in steamodded so i directly forbid using my contributions in any form for training an AI model to mod balatro, or using an AI model trained in that way to create a balatro mod
not that itd be hard to just manually remove those lines before training the model with it

#

but hey ill do my part

gaunt crater
#

i wouldn't hold my breath, this ai is pathetic rn despite being specialised

#

it's clearly not going anywhere, you're safe for at least a year or two

#

maybe longer? llms have been plateauing a bit recently

pine jetty
#

it's a "we need another billion dollars" style problem

#

and training data is getting more and more wrecked so

tropic hollow
#

Like what function does SMODS have what do they do

#

Like a interpretor or something?

gaunt crater
#

i doubt you could get it to do more than that

tropic hollow
#

Like copilot?

gaunt crater
#

is copilot good yet

tropic hollow
#

But what I meant is the apps that can be installed inside vscode that helps the program and user to understand what we are dealing with

#

Like python and lua

#

Maybe a addon for this is better

tropic hollow
#

It cannot replace human input

potent belfry
#

the issue there

#

is that someone could just learn from your code, make their own mods and train Ai on that

#

and technically it would still be Ai making mods, but no stealing was involved

#

the same goes for art

#

if you just draw some amount art and use it to train an Ai that only had your Images as direct input, it would be worse in terms of quality than if it had acess to all images in the world - true
but it would be perfectly moraly fine, don't you think?

#

to the guy that made this thread

#

preferably just ask some devs if they would be fine with the whole "Ai might use your content to learn how to code, do you give permission"

#

and preferably learn some code that balatro uses, make some simple mods using the code you learned and then feed it to AI as much as you want

#

kinda crazy that if a human learns from something - it's praised, if it's an Ai - it's despised

But I guess the world is still running with the "Ai = bad" that came from Generative ai vs artists discourse

pine jetty
#

I pretty firmly believe that generative AI's contributions to the creative space (including software development) are mostly negative.

#

Idk I also take pride in not relying on copilot or whatnot when I do my development, so I'm biased and likely egotistical about the whole thing.

#

I just feel like AI is, yeah, good at solving some problems, but it does so without really making the user need to learn anything.

#

And that's not a really good thing for the industry at large.

#

But generative AI is here and it's here to stay so I guess the question now is how do we, as devs, have a healthy relationship with it. Is it a good thing to rely on, how much is too much, where's that red line, etc. etc.

so many reactions on this post, pretty impressive

potent belfry
#

people have always tried/used shortcuts

pine jetty
#

Learning is a fundamental part of software development. It doesn't even need to be an active process - by doing software you learn through agglutination.

#

It can be a hobby - just like most things - but it's also a core component of the creative process.

#

Like I said: I'm obviously biased. I believe pretty deep down that I'm wasting my time using gen AI to solve problems at work because it's not making me a better dev. There's some ego in there, a lot of pride, and a lot of habit from the 14-something years I've been writing code.

potent belfry
#

I see

#

I mean, Ai isn't in the best of places rn either

#

ppl way too overestimate what it's actually capable of

#

and while it's in this imperfect state ppl hate on it for being mid and not that usefull

#

just worse than learning the thing yourself etc

#

Maybe with time things change for the better, the world needs time to adapt to the new technology and the technology needs to improve to be able to better satisfy the needs of the world

pine jetty
#

I just feel bad knowing that those needs are already met by people.

#

My wife is a writer and an artist and it's hard for her to deal with this sorta thing.

#

I actually really appreciate this thread because it's opened up some good discussion about gen AI and its place both in this space and in software as a whole. No hate on the author - I'm sure you have the best of intent and I hope it's given you a lot of context behind why people have these kinds of opinions about AI.

potent belfry
#

ye, I think the author just wanted people who don't have a clue about lua to be able to make their own simple mods lol

#

or something along those lines

pine jetty
#

Yeah. At a surface level it's a good thing to make modding more approachable to new devs.

#

But it's also deeply flawed

#

However I guess most things are, so who really cares. What matters is what makes people happy at the end of the day.

#

It just reminds me of when I used to teach kids how to code. The ones that worked really hard to "learn how to learn how to code" always did way better than the ones that copy/pasted without thought.

#

It's all about that intuition at the end of the day

i would like to point out the irony of this thread being created by Leonardo Davinci
