as of Version 1.0.1m-Full, Balatro does not support PlayStation and Nintendo button prompts, despite using SDL2's GameController API to manage general Gamepad support.

Until John Balatro Developer adds proper Button Prompt detection support for PlayStation and Nintendo Switch controllers: (refer to https://discord.com/channels/1116389027176787968/1312529594875908106) I created this simple mod modifies the gamepad_ui.png file by replacing Xbox Icon texture in favor of multiple button icons. All button icons came directly from the source, but one of them is custom made.

this mod pack includes the following:

  • DualShock 4
  • DualSense
  • Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (based on positional layout)
  • Steam Deck (custom)

the installation should be similar for those who use the "open Balatro.exe as Archive" method, just override gamepad_ui.png file.

took me a while to figure out. Steamodded support has been added.

As of this writing: this has only been tested on Version 1.0, but it should work on Version 0.9.8. This will be the final stretch for the official release.

been testing older steammodded branch for compatibility purposes. I've determined that it is not compatible.
given that version has been deprecated, : I decided to increase Steamodded version requirement to 1.0

with that: testing should be done and will be releasing for the official release soonish (hopefully: tomorrow?)

a small update has rolled out.

in a nutshell: I replaced Steam Deck's Face buttons with the Xbox equivalent inorder to avoid confused mixed-up.

and Nintendo Switch file strucutre has been changed after testing with a live Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (Balatro has Switch Pro Gamepad support! with the correct Nintendo Face button layout!).

Hey just a heads up you can't uncompress and open/use your mod in it's current state. You get a uncompression error related to the pngs

I tested it in my end.

the zip file uses Zstandard/ZSTD to handle compression. It won't work on Windows' own file zip systems, but it does work on 7-Zip 24.09 and NanaZip 3.1 respectively. (both are the latest version, as of this writing)

but I can guess why you're getting that error: you probably haven't updated your 7zip that supports ZSTD archives.

I suggest updating your 7zip or NanaZip program if you can. let me know if that still doesn't work.

if you use NanaZip: you can press the vertical Triple Dot > Advanced Options. it'll tell you which version you're using.

#

I'm asking these question inorder to isolate the problem, and potentially: looking into replacing ZTSD with older compression formats for the sake of wider compatibility.

Ahh ok I didn't use 7zip just the built in windows Extract all right click tool after installing 7zip for something else, and opening your compressed zip from github site, using 7zip opens the compressed file just fine. it's the built in windows extractor that has trouble

manly because the GitHub issue report pointed that it doesn't work on their 7zip.

lowkey assumed it's from the same person. Went ahead and tested myself on the latest version of 7zip.

anyway, Windows 11 [22H2]'s native File Archive system doesn't seem to support ZSTD.

but the usual rule of thumb when it comes to downloading a zip file is to use alternative File archive systems like 7zip, NanaZip and WinRAR, some mods will ask you to use third-party archival systems instead of Window's.
