Hey guys, ever wondered why balatro, a roguelike game, doesnt have a hp bar? Well now you dont need to, because of my idea: Health Bars! Let me explain how they would work.

So, Health in balatro is a bit weird, since there are no enemies that directly attack you, but blinds that dont do anything and make you reach a certain score to beat them. When we add health, it would be simple:

  • Small Blind Deals 1 dmg x ante if you lose
  • Big Blind deals 2 dmg x ante if you lose
  • Boss Blind deals 5 dmg x ante if you lose.
  • Ante 8 Bosses deal 10dmg x ante if you lose.

If you lose the blind but you dont die, you continue your run, but you wont earn any blind money or interest or extra joker income.

Health differs based on the deck or challenge, so heres the HP info for each deck.

  • Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, and Black Deck starts with 25 hp.
  • Magic, Nebula, and Ghost Deck start with 20 hp.
  • Abandoned Deck starts with 30 hp.
  • Checkered Deck starts with 20 hp.
  • Zodiac Deck starts with 15 hp.
  • Painted Deck starts with 35 hp.
  • Anaglyph Deck starts with 10 hp.
  • Plasma Deck starts with 15 hp.
  • Erratic Deck starts with 10-40 hp randomly.

When theres health, theres always healing! In the shop, there will be a heal option, costs 5$ to heal 5 hp. Max is 2 uses per shop. Theres also healing items and jokers, of course. All Food Jokers heal 1 hp when consumed.

Since we need consumables, ive had an idea: Potion packs! They would include potions that give various effects for a certain amount of time, can be instant use, per hand, per round, per ante, or even for the rest of the run!

Potion packs:

  • Standard Potion Pack (5$) includes 2 potion consumables. Choose 1 of them.
  • Jumbo Potion Pack (7$) includes 3 potion consumables. Choose 1 of them.
  • Mega Potion Pack (10$) includes 5 potion consumables. Choose 2 of them.

Potions have different rarities, and higher rarities has higher power effects and how long they last. Theres Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Legendary. (Note that Legendary always lasts for the entire run and can only appear once per run.)

Potions (Common):

  • Small Heal: Heal 5 Hp (Insta)
  • Interest Buff: Gain 1 max interest (1 round)
  • Mult Buff: Gain +10 mult (1 round)
  • Chips Buff: Gain +100 chips (1 round)
  • Cash Drop: Gain 10$ (Insta)
  • Block Buff: Gain +5 Shield (Insta)
  • HP Buff: Gain 1 max hp. (Insta)
  • Luck Buff: Gain +1 Luck (1 round)

(Note: Block is extra hp basically, luck is for stuff like wheel of fortune, from 1 in 5 to 2 in 5. so it adds 1 extra chance.)

  • Medium Heal: Heal 10 hp (Insta)
  • Mult Buff+ : Gain + 15 mult (2 round)
  • Chips Buff+ : Gain + 150 chips (2 round)
  • Cash Drop+ : Gain 15$ (Insta)
  • Luck Buff+ : Gain +2 luck (2 round)
  • Joker x2 : Select a joker it gains +1 retrigger (1 round)
  • Rockify: Select 3 cards, it becomes stone cards (2 rounds)
  • Wildify: Select 3 cards, it becomes wild cards (2 rounds)

  • Cash Influx: Gain an extra 5$ (5 rounds)
  • Lucky Stuff: +2 Luck (Perma)
  • Mult on Mult: Gain 2x mult (3 rounds)
  • Goldify: Turn 3 selected cards into gold cards. (3 rounds)
  • Steelify: Turn 3 selected cards into steel cards. (3 rounds)
  • Value Plus: Gain +1 pack content slot (Perma)
  • Packslot Plus: Gain +1 Pack slot in shop (Perma)

(Note: Permanent potions only appear once per run).

Potions (Legendary):

  • Party Time: All Jokers have a 1 in 4 chance to retrigger
  • Millionaire: Played cards give 1$
  • Army Sized: Gain 1.5x mult per joker
  • Luckiest Guy: Doubles all luck chances
  • Healthy and Happy: Gain +5 Max hp

(Note: Common and Uncommon Potions can appear multiple times in packs, while Rares and Legendaries only appear once in each pack, if they are in the packs, of course.)

Since theres now hp, Bosses deal 1 x ante dmg when their abilities are activated. For bosses that dont have active abilities (ones that dont trigger Matador), you will not take any damage, but if you lose you will take double damage from loss damage.

Potion likeliness of appearing:

  • Commons: Almost always appear in packs. Like common jokers
  • Uncommons: less likely, but still appears. Like Uncommon Jokers.
  • Rares: much less likely, but you get atleast one per run. Like rare jokers
  • Legendaries: EXTREMELY RARE, MUCH RARER THAN LEGENDARY JOKERS. (3x rarer than finding legendary jokers through soul)

The HP mechanics are supoosed to make the early game easier by letting you lose if youre not good enough, but much harder on you if you lose later.

Black deck is not stronger than plasma. Painted is not the worst deck in the game

The point of black deck having more hp than plasma deck is because plasma deck is better so it would be more balanced. I made painted deck have a lot of hp because it gives -1 joker slot, so to compensate i gave it extra hp, more than others
