might be the same bug https://discord.com/channels/1116389027176787968/1231619579977924679
idk then, srry
Thanks anyways
Its the job of the Digital Entomologist, Im just here to help 🤷🏻♂️
It's weird cause I've played long enough to have a few decks unlocked before this happened
try deleting your save.jkr file in %appdata%\Balatro\1
I'm having the same issue. The first time I deleted the save.jkr file, then the game itself, and it didn't come back. Then two days later it inexplicably started working again. That was 2-3 weeks ago.
However, it happened again starting last Thursday, but this time it hasn't resolved itself. Still stuck on the same black screen. I deleted the save.jkr file and the game itself over a dozen times now but to no avail.
I'm getting pretty close to just deleting it permanently, which is a shame because I already have 95 hours in. But it's getting to the point where just trying to start it is causing me undue aggravation and stress. It's just not worth it to keep trying and get no results.
Try using Mesa wrapper. It may help with GPU issues, since it rendering the image via software, not hardware
But the fps rate will be low
Second monitor kills the startup for some reason. Use windows to recognize only one monitor and enjoy. Took me days to figure it out.
It looks like OP is on a single screen/laptop though
It's the only thing a fresh install didn't fix for me and the issue tracks. Might have a second monitor we can't see.
Can confirm, laptop
no second monitor?
I also reinstall steam after backing up app data and manually wiped it. Could be a windows scaling issue.
Might also be a cloud recall that gets looped for some reason. Maybe try playing offline after a fresh install of both.
someone used alternate profile for thengame and it worked
idk how to swap with files though
delete the old ones and copy paste new ones into the appropriate file folder
Confirmed as well. Thanks, SAP. It was driving me crazy trying to figure it out on my own.
Nothing, still freezing
@mojoshivers You're welcome! Hope we can figure out OPs issue.

best I can do. GL
Fix Balatro Won't Launch,Fix Balatro Does Not Open/Start On PC
Step 1) Restart your PC
Step 2) Disconnect the controller, launch the game, you can connect the controller after launching the game
Step 3) Change the Windows Display Scale to 125/100 percent
Step 4) Run the game as an administrator from the game installation folder, also try compati...
nice
..i have bad news
i've already seen this video, and went through it
my only guess is maybe uninstalling the game, uninstalling steam, restarting my computer, then installing both
i dunno
I'm still convinced it's a windows display issue. Best of luck.
Have you tried Mesa wrapper?
Didn't have to. My issue was windows and Balatro were looped in deciding which monitor to display.
Yeah, no dice
Any possible issues with your hdd/ssd?
i don't think so? this game is the only one with any issues
@signal anvil be sure to verify files
Hey gang, I'm having the same issue. The game has worked fine for a few weeks, but as of a few days ago it just hangs at about 30% of the way through the progress bar. I've tried all the above solutions to no avail. Afaict there have been no changes to my PC in that time.
@hallow grotto I'm back to the same problem lyk
@hallow grotto @signal anvilright click desktop / display settings / graphics settings / remove Balatro from the preferences
Worked right away
I think it loops when trying to decide which graphics optimization to use. @signal anvil It'll come back like mine did. Hope this is the permanent fix.
No apps are displayed when I do this; Balatro is already absent from the preferences. I’ve just now tried adding it and running the game, once each using power saving or high performance options; it still hangs in the same place.
It's so random . I can't nail it down. I can't add anything else at the moment. Lyk what I find, if anything.
@here hey guys, stupid question, but does your game actually give an error like "does not respond"? or does it just sit there
What if you start it in a window and then fullscreen it after starting?
I've reported a stupid error I'm getting, so I thought maybe you have the same one
It just sits there. I’m not sure how to start the game in a window first but I’ll look into it and report back
Tried a few ways to get it to start windowed but it refuses to. @teal dust what method is working for you?
Question 1) does it make a whoosh sound when loading?
and 2) if it does, do you have a gamepad?
- No idea as I usually keep the PC muted; will test later though
- No I don’t
could you go to %appdata% (users-your user-appdata-roaming-balatro, assuming on Windows, and if you're on linux then you're better at this than me), make a backup, and replace settings.jkr with mine?
it's not in the profile folders, so shouldn't affect your progess, and it's called settings, so I suspect it might be settings.
Just tested: if there’s a woosh I’m not hearing it.
Tried replacing my settings with yours and the game still opens in fullscreen and still hangs in the same place
Ftr I am using Windows 10
Sad
I wiped balatro from app data, uninstalled and turned off pause background updates in steam and now it works i dunno
turned off pause background updates - could you explain please?
It's a steam option. Likely not the cause but it's what I changed. After wiping balatro from appdata and reinstalling it's stable for now.
be sure to backup your profile via steam or locally
@teal dust
And which tab of steam options? Sorry, there's a lot of them, could you send a screenshot of where it's located?
@teal dust right click balatro from the steam library / manage / updates / it's a drop down menu. again I don't think it's causing the problem, but it's what I changed
Today as I opened Steam, my computer (or my monitor, a Google TV) decided to automatically adjust the display resolution and/or zoom settings. I decided to try to run Balatro. Game opened properly.
PC settings:
Scale - 150%
Disp Res - 1920x1080
TV Settings:
Aspect Ratio 4:3
Balatro was running in Borderless mode (at 1920x1080), I've since switched it to Fullscreen which has also greatly improved performance.
After some troubleshooting I find myself unable to replicate this success
