#Steam Deck Crashes

I wish I had a better description for this bug, but Balatro crashes constantly on the Steam Deck for me. As I'm playing the game, it will occasionally freeze for a few seconds and crash the whole deck forcing a restart. Over the course of a few hours playing, it crashes several times. The other night, it crashed 4-5 times after 4 hours of playing. Just now after playing for 1 hour it crashed twice.

I have the new OLED deck. None of my other games have this issue, but it happens constantly for Balatro.

#

as another data point, it's not crashing for me at all on a non-OLED steam deck. played for 11 hours in 3 or 4 different sessions

I experience frequent crashes as well on my OLED deck; probably average under 10 minutes on default Proton, and can extend to around 30 minute sessions on Proton Experimental

#

both before and after the recent SteamOS 3.5.17 update

#

Sounds like this is specific to the OLED steam deck

#

Are you playing with any special settings in game? Vsync on? Any special TDP or steam deck settings?

gusty sentinel
#

no special TDP settings, have tried with VSync both on and off

#

along with toggling from Borderless to Fullscreen, without seeing a difference

#

Is there a different version of proton you can select?

#

For Balatro

gusty sentinel
#

yea, I've toggled thru quite a few of them and tried sessions for each

#

(I can give you the full list if needed)

warm badge
#

No that's okay

gusty sentinel
#

all different Proton versions behave the same, except for Experimental, where I have the best luck with ≈30 min sessions

warm badge
#

This sounds like it's something specific with the OLED model, maybe a firmware thing

gusty sentinel
#

happy to test anything else for you in the meantime, so feel free to msg me here or in DMs

I'll have to do some research

#

Thank you!

i'm having the same issue as you guys are and it's really frustrating. i bought the game couple days ago intending to play on my steam deck (non oled btw) but it crashes constantly. first time i played it, i got it thru the entire tutorial, which looking back it was a miracle but since then every 5-10 mins just crash after crash, forcing my deck to restart. believe me i've tried everything - different protons, different steam OS (stable, beta, preview), in-game settings, reinstalling on hd/sd card, etc. luckily it plays perfectly fine on my desktop and laptop, just not my deck. it's so weird because i've never experienced this with all my games on the deck. i know the developers are regularly releasing updates but i really hope this gets fixed soon. sorry for the long post

#

i was hoping today's update would have fixed the steam deck crashing but no, crashed after 5 mins of playing. appreciate you looking into it though

# warm badge Sounds like this is specific to the OLED steam deck

I also have issues on my Steam Deck OLED, but it doesn't crash : the performance get worse over time, I start at constant 90fps with 7W TDP and it gets worse and worse for more power consumption, I can get to as low as 30fps with 11W TDP... if I goes back to main menu and then continue my run, it goes back to smooth 90fps

#

on a regular deck everything is fine, except for a decrease in performance after the penultimate update

#

Just to give a quick update here - I am working on this issue, I haven’t forgotten and I’ll fix the problem but it might take a bit of time

lapis oriole
#

thanks thunk! you must have a lot on your plate as this great game has taken off recently and it's relatively a new game so i understand the time needed to resolve this issue. i'm still enjoying it on my desktop and laptop but to no longer crash on my steam deck would be a dream. thanks again balatrojoker

#

anyone experience prior crashing testing on Experimental? curious if this patch fixes the issue

will test this on my (non oled) steam deck later on experimental
i've had fine performance playing before on my deck

I have a LCD Steam Deck and the game never freezed/crashed for me

shrewd crystal
#

I have a OLED Steam Deck, no crash/freeze with 1.0.1c with 5/10 hours on it

#

1.0.0n was running fine (~5 hour session) last Friday on my LCD Steamdeck. I was playing in desktop mode on a 1080p screen if that helps.

#

Nope, never had a single crash, only small slowdown

lapis oriole
#

i tried playing on my steam deck lcd just now and it crashed a few mins after launching. a few days ago i was able to play fine for a coupe rounds. i've tried different proton versions going back to 6.0 but same results. i'm jealous of other lcd deckers out there that have never experienced a single crash while playing this game. makes me wonder what the difference is. i hope there's a new patch for this soon so i can finally enjoy it handheld without worrying

works well on lcd deck, without changing proton version

hot lintel
#

Played 52 hours on my steam deck oled 1TB not a singel crash, bug or slowdown

lapis oriole
#

@hot lintel so jealous man. what proton version you using?

waxen sage
#

Getting this on a 512GB LCD Steam Deck running SteamOS Holo steamdeck 3.5.17 20240228.2, kernel version 6.1.52-valve16-1-neptune-61.

Build ID 13990650

Not sure which Proton is being used, but I think it's ULWGL-Proton-8. 0-5-3.

#

Gonna try on 9.0 beta.

#

I will say I've experienced this with the default Proton version since I got Balatro, from 1.0.0c through to the current public beta I believe

#

not gonna ping but if there's anything else localthunk and the gang need to know, I'm all ears

waxen sage
#

Okay so I've played for about half an hour without a crash since trying Proton 9.0

wary knot
#

Is the Steam Deck version suffering with crashes only or it lags too?

waxen sage
#

I haven't experienced lag

#

But something about it has felt better since switching to Proton 9.0 beta

#

I am working through some issues with one user with a limited edition OLED deck - but is anyone having issues anymore?

#

I have both an LCD and OLED deck I have been testing with - both have been working great for this latest patch with no stuttering so if there are issues I'd love to compare what config differences we might have

gusty sentinel
#

over the next cpl days I'll do some testing on my OLED deck with new patch and normal Proton and report back

waxen sage
#

Had a crash about 10 minutes in on the latest update and proton 9 just now

lapis oriole
#

i got my hopes up thinking this would finally fix my crashes but no. i couldn't even start a game. it froze within a minute and restarted my deck to the 'verifying installation' screen. i've verified my installation files multiple times for this game and it says 100%. i've tried all the proton versions including the new 9.0. it must be my unit or something at this point but i've never had this many crashes with any other game. nowhere close. i'm losing hope

peak hedge
#

I've had like one instance of the game not booting, but otherwise, it's run flawlessly on my non-oled 64GB Steam Deck.

waxen sage
#

does the game keep logs anywhere? It'd be good to understand exactly what's causing this if there is a way to do so

#

(and honestly the crashing is alright to live with because the save system is solid, you always pick up where you left off and I love it for that)

#

I've kinda taken the crashes to be like "okay, step away for a minute, think about what to do next"

#

but of course that varies with your level of patience

gusty sentinel
#

just had first session on new patch on OLED Deck (default Proton), and experienced a crash after around 30 min, which is pretty much exact experience pre-patch

gusty sentinel
#

crashes seem be happening more frequently as of late, on Proton Experimental and other versions

#

possibly related to recent Steam OS updates, but hard to confirm

#

previously, sessions would last for around 30 minutes before crashing

#

now sessions are only lasting around 10 minutes or less, and then crashing

#

and I'm not sure if I specified earlier, but when the game crashes, the entire Steam Deck restarts

#

(not just a crash to Home or Library in Steam Deck interface, but forced reboot)

gusty sentinel
#

🚨 🚨 🚨

#

I think I may have resolved the issue, after extensive testing

#

in the Steam Deck power settings, I toggled TDP Limit on and set to 9 Watts, and toggled Manual GPU Clock on and set to 800 MHz, and haven't seen a crash after hours of playtime

#

I can't @ localthunk obvs, but if anyone does have a direct line to him, he's been in this thread before and is aware of the issue

# gusty sentinel 🚨 🚨 🚨

I can confirm your fix works!! haven't had a single crash since setting the tdp /clock to lower number, thanks a lot 👍👍👍
