we're retexturing everything we're allowed to retexture

this excludes the balatro logo, the localthunk logo, the playstack logo and the other social media icons ingame, we can't change those

you submit retextures to the google form

after you do that, i review submissions manually

if two submissions clash for the same spot, a vote is cast on which one gets the spot

which happens in a different google form

the entry you put in the form for which version it goes in may not reflect where it actually goes, it is also decided manually by me

when all's said and done, I import the sprites into the appropriate sheets and the mod is done

one more thing to say

i encourage the use of pixelator to turn images into pixel art
this allows more people to get involved with the project

full art will be prioritised over pixelator submissions in most cases

if you need templates for something, let me know

i have joker templates and voucher templates somewhere and could make templates for the others if you need them

I joined a patreon discord server full of balatro players and still only got one

we have to be willing to accept the fact that we're working with a few consistant workhorses and a bunch of people who come in and do 1-3 jokers

my general process for some of my lazier edits such as this one is:

1. get the original
2. posterize with usually 4-6 levels depending on how much of the shading I want to preserve, or just use threshold if it's already two colors anyway
3. downscale to the size of the card
4. recolor, usually using the existing color palette of Balatro if I can (someone's found it in this discord but if you search for it you'll get some overlap with the voucher of the same name)

like, even with this one, the original is literally just black and white, but even then I recolored to the darkest navy-ish shade in the Balatro palette

another tip I have as well is with the shovels, maybe put them in the shape of a (so just the tip, upright), so that it's still visually "spades" and there's no disconnect

the default aspect ratio of the sprite is like 45px wide

so you have to scale up by an exact factor if you want the pixels to match up without being cropped

so on that basis, I think you've either gotta:

1. choose a sprite that's a bit more square (maybe his idle)
2. just accept that it'll look a bit funky at 1x
3. do a cleaner job with key art
4. use a bigger sprite (I'm gonna investigate whether it's possible to use one of the ones in the corner of that sheet)

there's a big difference between pixel art and something that's suffered from compression because it's been downscaled

much older pixel art demonstrates this well, because the sort of blurring effect you get from CRT really uses pixel shading to create the illusion of a much more detailed piece of art than is actually possible with that pixel density

and while not all sprite art has the express intent of doing that specifically, it really physically demonstrates what sprite art tries to achieve

compared to a sprite of Shovel Knight, it is much harder for me to interpret this because it's not designed as pixel art - the shading hasn't been done at this low resolution with the intent of communicating the shading on, say, SK's armor - it's just been downscaled and has lost meaning as a result

which makes it less aesthetically pleasing

I hope that explains my intent well

I am by no means an expert, compared to say B my cards aren't using half as much artistic talent, but I care about doing these things right
