I've realized that the shader in the background is the one that lowers the fps

I've got a mod that removes that shader which boosted my fps to double the amount but it looked too dull

Which is also why resizing the window gives you better performance
Because there is less size/pixels to calculate the shader on.

It’s a reimplementation of LÖVE2D (˷9,800 lines of Rust) that runs the game’s unmodified Lua code. Three rendering modes: Sixel (actual pixels), Unicode octants, and half-blocks.
All shaders are emulated on CPU - CRT, dissolve, foil, holographic, polychrome, everything.

It's not PowerShell itself doing the rendering - it's the terminal emulator. The app uses the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sixel, which allows drawing actual pixels directly in the terminal. Windows Terminal 1.22+ supports Sixel natively. There are also fallback modes using Unicode octant characters (2×4 sub-pixels per cell) and half-block characters (▀) for terminals without Sixel support

What FPS are you running at?

It depends on the canvas resolution, which is controlled by the TUI_PIXELBUDGET env var. The internal canvas auto-scales to fit within a pixel budget
All rendering (sprites, shaders, CRT bloom, dissolve effects) is done on the CPU, so the pixel count directly affects frame time

Can it run any vanilla (no libraries) LÖVE project?

Currently it implements ~80 love.* API functions, but it was built specifically for Balatro, so it's not a complete LÖVE runtime. Many modules are stubbed (audio, threading, joystick, mouse). Simple LÖVE projects that only use the implemented subset (graphics, filesystem, event, keyboard, window, timer) might work, but there are no guarantees. That said, I'm open to expanding the API coverage if there's interest

Are there any stakes/decks? In that example I saw it instantly bring you to the game?

The instant start in the demo is TUI_AUTOPLAY mode - it auto-progresses through menus for showcase purposes. Without it, you get the full game experience: all stakes, decks, jokers, vouchers, etc. are available, since it runs the completely unmodified Balatro Lua code

How long did this project take you?

About a month

Is it only Windows-supported?

No - it's cross-platform. Built in Rust, so it compiles on Windows, Linux, and macOS. The README has build/run instructions for all three. That said, I've primarily tested on Windows, so Linux/macOS may have rough edges

In theory, yes - since the engine runs unmodified Lua code, mods that are pure Lua should work as long as they don't rely on APIs that aren't implemented (like audio, custom shaders via GLSL, or native C extensions). Mods that only change game logic, add cards/jokers, or tweak balance would most likely work. Mods that require Lovely/Steamodded loader or inject into the LÖVE runtime at a native level probably won't - the engine doesn't have those hooks. I haven't tested any mods yet, but it's something I'd like to explore later

Specific Mr Bones synergy sucks as a gameplay element. You'd need to set up an engine for it, and also to scale it you'd need to basically disable the legendary itself because you need to lose a blind

Which is hard if you're at ^2 mult. And at ante 15 or whatever, 25% of the score is super difficult to hit
