i draw text to a separate love2d canvas (a "second screen" of sorts that love2d provides, and is a drawable object that can be drawn to surfaces like card centers), and then i force feed that canvas to a copied and edited version of the card shader drawing code so that it draws the canvas instead of a texture

pretty much everything is in the drawstep file, the other files are just setup to create the new sprite object that draws the canvas
the "UISprite" class extends Sprite, so it can do everything that a Sprite can do, and i override its draw_from function and draw_shader function to pass a canvas object into it. then the code in the DrawSteps themselves just clear the canvas and draw new text onto it
the sprite behaves like some other sprites in the game (i think seals do this) in that it's actually one shared sprite that jumps around and redraws itself on every card that needs it, for performance reasons. likewise, the canvas is just a single canvas that gets cleared and redrawn to every time a card needs to draw the text
