Yeah, modding to me always feels very much in the sense of the old hacker and programming communities, where open source is the core of community. I don't think it's inherently 'evil' to paywall a mod (some games are functionally just giant mods for other games, after all), but I think communities built out of hobbyists and enthusiasts benefit from freely accessible and usable information and tech

A lot ofmods are built on the sweat of enthusiasts who did not care to get paid for their work, and the community is supported by those people, too. In the case of Balatro modding, the only reason you could monetize something that uses the existing tools is because you expect and need those tools to remain open source, free to use and maintained by volunteers that do not get paid. This is inherently different from like game dev spaces, where a lot of tools have specific guidelines for monetization because it's an expectation.
