from personal experience though: i think modding is a great start for learning programming. you can see the results of your doing in (almost) real time, without having to code an entire game yourself, most of the heavy lifting has already been done for you so you can jump straight to the interesting part.

it will be tough starting out, but once you figure out coding in one language, programming gets a million times easier, since every other language is basically different only in how you write it, the logic is still the exact same (hence why we call them "languages")
