Counters are a mechanic for Kino that I'm setting up to be an API mod because I'm really liking the design space for them. They're a new thing to add to cards with their own calculate function

The idea is that effects can place counters on jokers or playing cards that just add an additional effect. The ones I use in Kino are Money counters as a fun way to mess with economy, or retrigger counters, so I have some more balanced way to deal with the power of retriggering jokers, for example

For Kino, the positive ones are useful, but the detrimental ones are the ones I'm really finding a lot of use for. It allows me to design boss blinds that can punish you outside of the blind itself, without just being a permanent detriment you have to deal with. Poison counters that lower your hand's score by 5% when they trigger, or Debt counters that lose you money equal to the counters when they trigger

But them removing themselves, basically, is a really handy balancing tool, and it also gives you so much more space to play around things

Also, in Kino's case, I had some jokers that give power increases which were incredibly hard to balance. So I've moved it over to using 'Power counters' now, which giver a flat 100% bonus while there's a counter. That way you can start stacking up, while power boosts are still limited in scale
