In Dutch, our gendered articles cannot be argued anymore. They're just arbitrary, but most native speakers who don't know that will try and guess that there is some logic to it. The only logic that's measurable is that words take the article of words that have the same vibe, haha

It's this conceptual eroding that happens, where grammatical features start shifting once they're seen as a given, instead of a core part of a language. A lot of grammatical gender emerges from interpretations of animate vs inanimate, but once the language no longer sees 'animatedness' as an important principle, other associations start to take over and you get drifting. With Dutch probably as the ultimate example, where it's drifted to vibes-based grammatical gender
