Yeah the foil is a huge safety net. It sucks leaving the discard behind but you have to, can't buy everything

You won't get to use the discard if you die

In multiplayer you skip the glut and take the discard voucher and hope you don't die, but you still get to go ahead at the cost of a life so it's much "less" riskier there
