generally, blue stake's (current, as of patch 1.0.1f) effect of -1 discard heavily discourages playing 5-card hands due to inconsistency in being able to draw them; flush in particular gets significantly more flak due to it not providing nearly as much scaling via planets or consistent joker scaling like straights and saturn/runner, to compensate for its being a 5 card hand
in this sense the evolution of the meta has largely favored pairs due to their generally being easy to draw, easy to make use of in-hand effects such as golds and especially blue seals, and more accessible synergies with jokers such as hologram (more effectively able to scale hologram via bloating the deck if the hand played is largely unaffected by deck size hampering easiness to draw), blackboard (one can play a pair and unscored hearts/diamonds in order to always proc it) and scaling +mult jokers such as green joker (discarding for pairs is redundant)
tl;dr pair good

and the fact pairs are weak works in their favor

it's possible if you get baron + mime + DNA + at least 2 blueprints / brainstorms, accumulate gold red seal kings and eventually pivot into red seal steel kings, then at like ante 22, 23, or 24 (I forget which one where the score becomes almost impossible to beat), you reroll using the boss reroll vouchers for the serpent and you try to find a burglar to replace the DNA with, farm the serpent for huge hand size and copy properly on your final hand. Note that this will only work if you are on plasma deck

well perkeo observatory is easier to set up but insanely hard to get the right luck because you need to hit a soul (0.1% from what i remember) and hit a 1 in 5 on top of that for perkeo not to mention the observatory and the skill to survive antes as time goes on whereas baron mime is a butt ton of deck fixing and econs/rerolls
