If you're playing pairs it's better to play 3 cards, or fewer cards in general, if you play 3 cards for example with an 8 card hand, assuming it's first hand and you have no other pairs, you have 15 outs. If you play 5 cards you're left with 9 outs and you eliminated outs for future pairs.
