The only difference is that you can't choose to have the Tooth take effect. You can choose to include debuffed cards in your hand or not, or to play a hand that gets delevelled.

As a stats and economic student I'm really tickled by this game

The stats connection is obvious, but the economics side has more to it than money go up and the concept of investing. The goal of an economist is smooth out not only the lows but also the highs of an economy, and you have to make some rounds "worse" (although extra score goes into the void anyways) so that you have better rounds later on. It sounds similar to investing but it's a different mindset. For example spending less during good rounds is an analogue to contractionary fiscal policy
