Hey, question about seeds that I'm not super clear on: What exactly does a seed affect? Like, I'd guess that all of my shops and bosses would be the same, but does it also affect what's inside the packs, Glass rolls, stufff like that?

The seed system is set up so that these things are as consistent as possible between runs

Every type of RNG is handled by a different “subseed”, and for most things a new “subseed” is made each ante

So if you reroll more you can find different jokers on a seed, but the joker order will always be the same (assuming you don’t already own any of the jokers generated - a separate pool handles that)

I've run a few test seeds and the most outlier I've found yet is 10 of the same rank card / 4 of the same suit.

I can imagine that there would be guardrails on the "acceptable" values, just wanted to ask before I start scraping seeds for content runs

But I've found multiple of those type decks, which is why I ask, if the game's doing a post-seed check it means that there's a ceiling on the outlier

I really need to start recording my runs.

But anyway, Socks and busken, and dusk are 2 major stand outs. Both found early. Also grabbed the joker that multiplies according to how many metal cards.
Did pick up mime, but dropped it for the 3rd lengendary. Managed to put ecto to socks and busken.

Peakeo I just kept using at first for strength and death because I managed to find a 9 poly steal. Made 2, then strengthened them up. Wish I could tell you which shop, I wasn’t rerolling and felt I needed to find more cards. It was between 3rd and 4th joker, just after midway.

Once I had 5 or 6 of them. I made peakeo dupe Planet X. (Also use the non negatives because he’ll still copy a negative and it doesn’t use up space)
Slowly glassed the polys from steal to glass, But never ran 2 glasses together. Never saw invisible joker. And skipped the last legendary due to room, but the boss that got me was because my glass polys were clubs. 😦

The main issue I can think of that would be causing your problem would be playing on Ghost Deck (the one that has spectrals spawn in the shop and gives you Hex)

To make room for those spectrals it has to change the type of cards that spawn in the shop

For context: the run is seeded, and I mapped out my findings in a text file. According to my research, the Celestial contains Mercury, Jupiter and Mars.
As for Jumbo Arcana, it has Hermit, Devil, Hanged Man, Lovers and World, with the randomly drawn cards being Ace of Spades, Ace of Hearts, King of Spades, Jack of Diamonds, Seven of Clubs, Three of Spades, Two of Clubs and Two of Diamonds.

FYI, my deck is still intact, as you can probably guess from the Ante and Round Number.

So I believe I did everything correctly - editing the search.cl to change the game version, and I mapped the filter in the same file to the max_legendary.cl you posted to the channel. Running it through cmd, it seems to be working, and is using cpu/memory. But it has been stuck on "Starting searcher..." for ~10min - am I just in for a wait? - using the default thread number

The three variables used to generate a seed are the exact runtime of the game (as a float), and the cursor coordinates

The last two variables can be easily controlled, but for the first I think you have to force the game to run at <10 FPS (which will force the in-game timer to run at exactly 10 FPS)

The in-game timer resets whenever you load the main menu so you can simply retry until you get the exact frame you need to start a new run

See, this is the funny part, I'm not 100% sure what I mean by it myself.

I asked because I am curious what exactly makes a bad seed and how many seeds are truly miserable to play on white stakes.

Like, I've played a seed here or there that ended up really poorly for me, but that's just because I read the room wrong, thought the game was telling me to go one way in the early part, and then slightly later all it gave me was other things and I didn't pivot and thus fell short.

As I hear more and more people question how dependent on RNG the game is, I get more curious how possible it is to win nearly every seed on white stakes. Like it's obviously decently RNG dependent on truly making giant numbers at times, but my running theory is that most games are winnable on white stakes on your first play if you know what you are doing.

Now I could just continue playing a ton of white stakes and make a list of my own seeds that I lose on and replay them if I feel like they are difficult (which I will likely slowly do), but I also figured it wouldn't hurt to see if anyone else had come up with a list of just meh to bad seeds to reduce some randomness from my search. Plus then I could hand those seeds out to some players to practice on and hone their skills after I confirm they are indeed winnable. (So I guess seeds with no "good" jokers would also be fine for that purpose) aka they may also be decent tutorital/practice seeds for people.

Also I very much appreciate you trying to find "bad" seeds for me. I'm also quite amused you continue to be seemingly be breezing through the ones you are finding so far.

I personally think all seeds are winnable on white stake. Though not all builds can survive all seeds, if that makes sense.
So like, if you don't know what seed will give you, and you try to "gamble", and built into specific direction, that has a chance of losing the run, because later on the seed just does not give you anything that complements your build.

I don't think replaying the "bad" seed is a right approach, since first, you already know what you will get, and second - you go into mindset "well, I know that highroll approach is not going to win it, so I will pick up anything that will help me and that will give me a win". This mindset makes the winning consistent, but it does not make it any fun. Btw this is the "approach" I had when trying try win on the "bad seeds" that my filter found, I don't usually use shoot the moon, but hey it worked on those seeds!

Risk builds are fun, because of that added challenge when the game does not go your way (e.g. meeting the plant when you have face card build 😹). Always going for the "safest" play is just boring, since winning on white stake is not that big of a challenge for a good player.

Getting tunnel visioned into a build you're used to (e.g. defaulting to flushes) is often another reason people could keep losing and call seeds bad, because the seeds didn't give them what they wanted to make their build work.

Also, early on or on specific bosses, you might also lose because you cant draw specific cards. Those are stinkers, that's why I am always deck thinning when I go for straights/oak/full house builds

No that makes sense. My first bit of advice I tend to give players anymore is "I don't know what build I'm making going into any game. I don't decide that, the game does."

I also agree that chasing the moon can be a lot of fun, but for me, the last two weeks I've personally been obsessed with trying to figure out the best ways to help other players move to barely winning to consistently winning.

I would agree that winning on white stake is not a big challenge for a good player. I'd be shocked if I lost more than 20% of my games that I was actively trying to win on white stake at this point. But I am curious how close I can actually get to 100% and how concise I can get advice to other players to get them closer to 50% when they are getting frustrated from not improving as I've found a lot of players are having fun for a bit, but then never really shift from purely chasing the jokers they see high on tier lists to understanding how to use all the mechanics.

Like, I might not personally get much out of playing a bad seed over, but other players might.

I can likely find fun in playing some "bad" seeds, but I'm guessing that the way things are randomized there aren't truly any horrible seeds. But I'm far more curious to explore the "bad" seeds than good ones right now in order to help other players get better.

Though I suppose for simplistic sake. Is there any seeds you know of that give pretty much nothing for flushes. Cause boy, some people need to learn how to play anything but flushes >.<

Sometimes you just fail on a game but could have made it had you did something differently. I once received a seed in Sept demo that said "dont play flushes". I intentionally played flush build with that and some difference in decisions caused me to hit telescope earlier than the original run OP had which made me pass the run.

Balatro takes the letters and numbers that make up a seed and turns it into effectively a collection of dice.
Each die rolls for a different thing. You can imagine a D20 rolling for each tag, another die rolling for the cards you get in the first shop, etc.
After each ante, the game replaces most of the dice it uses with new ones so that what you did in the last ante doesn’t affect what appears in shops, packs, etc.

So, how much is really known about how the cards/packs inside seeds work? Not sure if the below is "known" and obvious, but I didn't know until now. Curious to learn what else is known about card positions inside a seed:
So a few days ago I posted in #🎙・server-chat and was discussing a bit with somebody: I was confused, that I got different cards inside the packs depending on what I picked before. So e.g. Arcana pack in Ante 3 after SB was not always giving the same cards.
I then learned that card positions aren't fixed, but the packs have a fixed content and order. So if I open my first arcana pack at point X in time, the contents are the same as if I buy it at point Y.
So I did a more deep research / plenty of re-runs of the same seed to see what is inside my first arcana pack if I open it a various positions in time. I did that with a seed I had which gave a soul stone inside the first pack and I think the results are interesting:
My general learning seems to be that the contents of an arcana pack are fixed per Ante, so the contents will change in the next Ante (no matter if Normal, Jumbo or Mega: They just have more cards, but Jumbo and Mega at least have the same cards the Normal pack has). However, the soul stone seems to be an exception it seems? If you're blessed with a soul stone, it will always appear, but sometimes give a different card. The other cards inside the pack are still different per Ante.
Here's what I found so far what is inside the first arcana pack you open that run at specific times:

Sometimes you face the issue, that the description of the Seed in the Seed Chat doesn't meet with your experiences. Meaning the OP says something like "in Ante 2 there's a Soul" but you can't find a Soul, not matter what you do and you also made sure you have the same game version....
As far as i learned it's because of different "unlock-levels", right? This is very confusing imo. Wouldn't it be easier for everyone to only post Seeds in the Seed Chat with everything unlocked so that everyone sees the same? The game even offers you different profiles for exact this reason. So for example Profile 1 is your "real profile" where you do unseeded progress. Profile 2 you for example modded with debug mode and have everything unlocked and only here you try seeded runs. Or am I missing something?

No it was mega synergy with eternal dagger

so in base game that seed is useless

basically I was able to get spectral pack into immolate and then Madness Plus third joker so that dagger doesn't kill madness

right in the very first shop

scaling of dagger + madness was really good

in regular game it is just "early madness seed" I suppose it can be interesting on black or higher stakes where you can get eternal jokers... but not as interesting as when you start with eternal dagger

from what I’m beginning to understand is the version that the the ps5 is on is like you said, out of date and the seeds are bugged.

Not entirely how it works, but pretty close. So the RNG stuff is mostly defined by ante. But there isn't "X pack has Y", the cards per pack type generate in specific order. So it's more like 4th tarot card in pack is soul or 2nd spectral card in pack is immolate. So you can skip packs in first shop, and open packs in 2nd shop or open a pack from ethereal tag (as long as they appear there, ofc)
