Speaking of the tarot cards, I'm trying to make a custom set and I think I picked something that I'm not competent enough to render...

For the death card I want to have a woman in a black dress and veil eating an apple with her left hand and holding a skull with her right. ( So the apple is frame right and the skull is frame left, representing the card's effect. )

a couple things: First off, colors: I'd highly recommend colorpicking from jokers in order to make something that fits in with all the other art in the game, and an aside: If you want to make it fit in with the other consumables (not necessarily planets, though,) consider picking a small palette of like, 3 or 4 colors in total. Secondly, if you are wholly replacing all of the tarots, consider you don't necessarily need the tarot overlay (i.e. the border and such). You may find that something else works better. Lastly: consider refining your idea. Too many details confuses the eye, especially for something that you need to recognize at a glance. Strip out details that don't necessarily matter, and zooming in on the important bits.

I could give spriting a similar idea a go.

I am replacing all the tarot cards, but I like the overlay, although I may adjust the colours. I understand what you mean with fitting in. I'm using more vivido colours in some places than the game normally does. ( The game doesn't usually use true black. ) I'd say that my level of detail is about the same or less than for the death card. Have you actually looked at it??? All of the tarot cards are pretty detail rich, but the death card is especially noteworthy imo.

Also, please do try to do your take on the idea! I'd really like to see it.

They are detail rich, but the important bits are standout, while less important bits are less contrast-y, and are basically only representations of what they might look like on a real tarot deck. As well as that, a lot of detail blends in with the dithered background, which helps to increase contrast with the stuff that's not.

Remember that these cards are usually seen for a number of frames that i can count on my hand. They should be obvious and apparent, without having to read anything. There should be one shape or silhouette that makes it clear as day what it is

I would again stress to use the palette that the jokers and consumables provide. You consider yourself an amateur artist, so I'd recommend taking all the shortcuts you can, so you can focus on the art itself.

I've already shown my Death Card. Emperor is a good guess, but it's actually supposed to be Chariot. The tarot set I am making is a themed deck based around some characters from a more sci-fi series.

Well it's a thing I've been working on with a friend of mine for many years, but there's nothing published to show. Even this set is mostly just for fun, for us. It's been a long-standing joke that a certain character has so many kids we might as well use the tarot cards to keep up with them.

Yeah, thanks! And it's mostly a written story, but there are many illustrations my friend made. There isn't much to read though, it's basically like all worldbuilding notes. The character on the Chariot card is named Pim and he races space ships.

Also, I'm not quite sure where I was going with this concept, but I kinda like how it's going? This one is the most heavily similar to the original Balatro card, I think, with the buildings and horizon line being directly traced, but I also added a mountain, restored the lake from the design that it's based on, and moved it to the side to allow for the composition to work with the pensive observer.
