my process still very much so operates on "f-it-we-scrawl" basis but instead of scrawling swaths of color i block in my shapes with pixel brushes

and then when i layer lights and shadows i can do so the same way

the secret sauce
i took the joker sprite and selected every other pixel forming some sort of grid pattern
i then moved the selected pixels down to another space
and then i used soul_pos to overlay the second sprite over the first one, giving it the effect it has ingame
