So this Joker ironically is the one that underwent the most balance testing. I first tested this joker with X0.5 and then X0.75 and it was incredibly inconsistent and outclassed by Constellation and Hologram by a huge margin. The problem is how rare a Spectral pack can be. On average you're only getting maybe 3 or 4 for in the shops the entire run up through Ante 8. And some of those packs may appear before you find PHANTOM in the first place. Now, you can find skip tags to open spectral packs, as well as use one of the Spectral generating Jokers (Seance, Sixth Sense, and PJA 10 which i added to help alleviate the rarity a bit as well ) Bad spectral packs are actually a brutal downside as well as you will be tempted to make bad decisions for a chunk of Xmult, e.g. adding cards/suits you dont want. The allure of this Joker is that you can get a big chunk of Xmult all at ince, but you're gambling every time you open anther Spectral pack. I still think, barring the idea that you're using Ghost deck, that Constellation and Hologram are slightly better Jokers. Thank you for the compliment! Yeah, I feel it would be a rough joker to use. Probably only want to use 1-3 spectral packs and then just dont use anymore.

always risk the chance of getting Ahnk + Hex as your only 2 options while you have a full build, and then either reset phantom or start a new build

could also get Hex + Ectoplasm while having editions on all jokers, where skipping is your only option.

Or hex/ecto + ahnk while you have full joker slots with full editions, meaning you skip or brick the game lol

though you could also get Trance/Sigil/Deja Vu/etc etc

I have used it in several runs for testing, but since I've released the mod and came across Phantom naturally in my runs, it has been incredibly well balanced actually! But i understand my experience may not reflect others. I haven't yet got a Ahnk/ hex only pack but I fear this so much! Adds a layer of risk to the game that i enjoy. I did however take Ectoplasm once and shrink my hand size down when I didn't exactly want to, and add 4 standarrd enhanced cards when i was running an Ace build lol.

I love the idea of this phantom creature making you do stupid things for quick and oh so valuable Xmult lol

The best ways ik how to break it seams to be, Ghost Deck, Skip tagging a Spectral pack, Spectral Generating jokers, and if you can get an Omen Globe🔥 (as you can freely skip Arcana packs if you don't want the Spectral cards inside without resetting Phantom)

If it weren't breakable then imo it wouldn't be fun (atleast imo)

I do want to say, Constellation goes hard as hell on the Zodiac deck. My biggest issue is with what you had mentioned Sizzle, the chance of getting a pack you can't do anything with, I'm fine with Hex / Ahnk but it is unfortunate when you cannot physically take other cards. But I just like to imagine that the Phantom is just screwing with you if this happens, as in my little weird lore about the Phantom, he's doing his best job to tempt you and reset you back to nothing and kill you lol. Kinda like a curse i guess

I think the other thing with this is that it's a lot easier to regain what you lost, a few somewhat rare booster packs, versus usually several antes worth of hands played, and losing the mult is only an issue if you're too greedy when it comes to spectral packs. I'd say it's a lot more fun to use than Obelisk myself.

I love Obelisk, I was just comparing the potential failure cases to both of them. That being said, losing Phantom can kill your run just as hard as Obelisk failing

Phantom does take less time to scale back up, but it does require both luck and shops. If you drop Phantom scaling and the 3-4x mult was important, you probably lose, just like how you lose if you crash a high scaled RtB or Obelisk you needed

I'm not a big fan of Obelisk, I do enjoy the risk factor it adds but it makes things a little bit too intricate sometimes when I just want to relax and flow through a game. Kind of like Vagabond, amazing Joker but I dislike managing it sometimes. Phantom definitely makes me think a little but it doesn't completely alter my hand to hand gameplay so much, which is a lot more enjoyable for me as well. I just have to pay more attention those Spectral pack skip tags when i have Phantom bc i usually wouldn't take those.

Yeah i thought about something like that at some point during the coding of interstellar. But then yeah, i realized it was just space joker. Random planets helps build secondary hand types and still fuels Constellation bc its not upgrading hands directly. Them being negative planets give you actually pretty ok econ if you choose to sell them bc they sell for more.

At one point i had it doing the same thing it does now but without the negative planets, essentially the 1.0 8 ball joker but for 7s.

The thing that makes this joker potentially far better than Space Joker is the fact that planets held in your consumable slots do not appear in shops, even if they are negative. So you can manipulate planet spawns really hard if you get a good 7s deck going. And this is why i am looking for player feedback from ppl who use the jokers atleast a few times.

Yeah i can see the reason to compare, it is the same rarity too. It's not necessarily built around being an all around good joker, its meant to be like Scholar or 8 ball, a niche use for 7s that gives a run flavor and direction. But yeah, it really is essentially 8 ball pre update but much much better besides the fact that its uncommon instead of common. It has a nice little synergy with constellation and it gives econ/planet spawn increased chances, idk i think its far stronger than Space Joker if you focus on 7s. Its in a weird spot balance wise. It's definitely strong i worry its op, if anyone ever hyperfocuses a 7s deck, especially with retriggers, you will see what im saying, it goes insane.

Like if you get your deck all set up with lots of 7s, and you retrigger a bunch of them and get for example 3-4 negative planets, i believe they sold for $3 each so thats $9-$12 in one round, pretty dang good, Plus no two planets will be the same. Eventually the game defaults to giving you plutos if you are holding them all. Which is my problem with this joker.

Sorry to bring this back up, but I wanted to bring closure to this. So the solution I found that i'm quite happy with was to rework Interstellar like this, now gives a 1 in 5 chance for each scored 7 to create a Negative "The High Priestess" instead of the previous 1 in 4 chance to create a single Negative Planet Card. That way now you can no longer hold all the different (negative) planets at once anymore, and you can still use them at your convenance when you have consumable space, it also gives more planets overall which ppl suggested, and still gives a decent econ, $4 per sold The High Priestess. This will go hard on any sevens deck i imagine, but with Constellation or Campfire... 🔥 Gonna be testing more, but these changes to Interstellar have already been updated and released in my mod officially.

I will continue to look at the "1 in 5" chance and see if needs adjusted. But I do not want to make it easy to break wildly with a single Oops All Sixes!

Made a concept of how a board game designer could make a board game adaptation of Balatro (with a lot of inspiration from Slay the Spire The Board Game)! There are A LOT of different game phases and concepts going on in this mockup since I like to work in a visual medium to show my design ideas. So there are 2 modes for multiplayer. "One For All" and "Spectator." Both involve the same two components for each extra player: a basic deck of unmodified cards and a discard track/marker similar to the one you see in the mockup.

While the main player is playing the real blind, each other player is playing a separate game using their deck where they can only play ONE HAND and they have to beat the amount of half of the blind (so the first blind in this board game is 60 Chips, they need to play one hand that beats 30). They get the discard amount and hand size that their deck/build allows and when they play their hand they use the hand level and jokers that the main player has, but it only applies to one hand that they play.

If they win, each gains for Small/Big/Boss: +$/$$/$$$ to the Cash Out, and if they lose each is -$ from Cash Out.

In "All for One Mode" each player alternates playing the entirety of each Ante, and then all other players are playing the mini game trying to win extra $ for Cash Out.

In "Spectator Mode" someone plays the main player the entire time and the other players are playing mini game the entire time.

The collaboration comes from making the decisions together on how to augment the main deck in the Shop and with Skip Tags.

The idea of versus Balatro sounds very cool to me, there’s a lot of ways that could go. Could be something like what happens in games like tetris where playing a really good turn would give your opponents a bunch of junk to deal with somehow

And the better hand you get the more chaos you cause for others y’know

as someone who has played the video game but only seen the board game i feel like id need to disagree since they change their base for numbers in that game entirely

due to the nature of numbers in balatro you cant really do

but also for a balatro board game to handle numbers the same it would enforce the problem that balatro couldnt solve which is that most of the time you can just calculate what the score is gonna be, and in a board game fashion theres really no way to automate that

although looking at it again i see you dont handle numbers the same

If you do like

Pixel art crisp edges and no gradients then you can get some clean GIFs

But the more individual colors you have - and I do mean unique hex codes - the worse the compression gets

Moreso make the boundaries between colors more clear

Reducing the color count also makes the image easier to read
