There was a post on r/dandadan that got heavily downvoted which i was searching for which I agreed with almost completely, haven't found it though so I'll have to put my thoughts into words myself.

  • It's very surface level; there's basically no subtext and it just takes so long to get to an incredibly obvious climax, it just seemed like it was made to be half-watched, which I just do not enjoy doing with media.
  • The humour really isn't it for me. It's really edgy and "wacky" and just feels forced and makes me feel uncomfortable. There was only one moment in all four episodes I watched which actually made me even come close to laughing, which was when takakura calls momo a bitch under his breath

Okay. Read through the post too and it was honestly, just flat out wrong in most of it. Looking at dates at least.

  1. Thereā€™s a lot of subtext, just not at the beginning since it starts out just a fetch quest and friend gathering for the most part. especially amongst (and ima spoiler warning a lot since you have seen much yourself) ||all the aliens and the relationships between each other and the yokai while also having their own different systems in place that mirrors many of our own but have very brash contrasts, lots to delve in through their||
  2. Humor is subjective and I wonā€™t argue against it being edgy or wacky.
    Also idk how you could agree with most of what he said when most of what heā€™s saying was referring to farther into the manga than what the anime even ended at.

1.complete 180ā€¦ thatā€™s just? Not true. ||chapter 1 momo is almost r*ped.. this happens in haunted house arc with the bath scene too. It gives a lot of uncomfortable situations with a lot of characters. It continues to give dark and gloomy scenes while also showing a lot of light through the humor itā€™s trying to interject, now whether that falls flat or not is subjective, this even goes on to seeing an entire genocide happen of one of the main characters species. It definitely keeps a lot of its gloomy and dark and edgy sides so idk where that was from||
2. No structure/direction. I can agree to an extent but ||the direction for the first part is more of a slow burn romance that the direction focuses on the characters themselves and their developments into fighters and friends rather than a direction of being able to find the Dandadan, which is what the next part, after okarun gets both his balls, goes, with a new overarching goal and new characters getting added with their goal and more information being dropped on us, so it takes a shift midway through to what is currently going on in the previous few arcs||
3. No villains. We literally saw a group called ā€œthe space globalistsā€ who ||go around and conquer every planet they come across and enslaved entire species and massacred the rest. They beat the main cast so hard that fucking okarun almost died and was a spectral projection. Only a small force of them were defeated by the crew, and right after this post we got introduced to a new big bad whoā€™s in search of the Dandadan and is a big mystery to us currently, but we know some of his intentions and goals and what heā€™s currently doing||
4. The combat ||I donā€™t get this one either. Esp the okarun and the spiral shit? He learned it, used the technique to save the crew and momo and then next arc he wasnā€™t really around to fight anymore as it was a super heavy momo focus but still used it in the end when needed? It wasnā€™t particularly used against fodder? Same for all of their attacks. And theirs no clear power levels because there isnā€™t supposed to be, there isnā€™t supposed to be a ā€œthis guy is spirit king levelā€ because all the abilities are so unique and different itā€™s a completely different matchup between the aliens and yokai and everyone in between. No one persons power is the same as another. There is no clear power system other than ones spiritual energy for the yokai ability users, but not everyone uses them so like? Most of the final fights are a team up because the main crewā€™s biggest ability is their actions amongst each others. Not no power of friendship stuff but rather their tenacity and ability to save each other and make up for each otherā€™s shortcomings. Which has been how things were done sinceā€¦ the first major fight||
