I actually based Balatro on a game called Big 2, not poker. I originally started working on it as an online version of Big 2 I could play with some friends over the pandemic

Vanilla STS is great but the mods give it infinite replayability. For STS specifically I played mods when people started making them I was a pretty avid player even during early access so maybe like 300 hours in? but in general my idea when I play modded is if mods will make my experience from what I want from the game better a good example is Darkest Dungeon I play alot of QoL and stuff that makes the game faster because after the early game slump the mid game is super grindy
