Bosses can absolutely ruin gold stake runs. Flint, Manacle (4 or 5 card hands), Needle, Water, Violet Vessel, Wheel or Mark (without savescumming).

Chicot lets you go for riskier strats (strats with more counters in this case) and allows you to save more money by you not having to roll for a way to counter the boss that counters you.

You get to do what you are already doing but better.
