i actually am playing it to see what all the fuss is about, and heres my guess for why so many people play it:
its basically a tycoon game, the longer you stay the more money you get---aka, mmm happy chemicals
events happen in the game which cause a bit of an entertainment factor---plus they actually affect gameplay and outcomes, so people stick around more to see them happen.
admins sometimes abuse their power there, causing more events to happen and for more chaos to bestow upon the servers
it's been made a challenge for it to reach the most players in one moment ever, and that makes people determined to stay
you can still grow things offline, so people are likely to come back to check growth progress with their garden

...and probably more factors that I'm too lazy to think about.
