Typically if you get up to +10 mult i think youre generally fine till ante 4 so if you find a good chunk of mult early you can then spent an ante or two building up money

What would a "Well-designed" Joker be defined as, base game or fanmade?

I see a well-designed joker as a joker that has defined strengths, does not require synergies with other jokers, and contributes to one of the following categories without bleeding into other ones:

• Score support
• Deck support
• Sustain/Income support

A joker shouldn't necessarily just be something you pick up and can easily cruise with for the entire run, at least to me.

(There are a few that are like that, though, I think rebate is one of them but at least that's more towards sustain support which isn't as overtly a run-defining joker)

Yes, that's not good balance, but it's not a good example because that doesn't currently exist in the scope of vanilla Balatro's balancing.

I find Séance to be unbalanced because its reward is bad for its specificity, but at the same time I'm also thinking: "How else would you be able to balance this without making it unbelievably strong?"

What I said above is the general template, but as you'd said before: More specific effects are reserved for rarer jokers.

Do you want a good common joker? Make it flexible, with a small to moderate reward.
Do you want a good uncommon joker? Give it a more specific trigger case or take away common factors from the game, and increase its reward to reflect it giving a stronger reward.
Do you want a good rare joker? Make it incredibly specific, or potentially punishing to play out of its use case, and increase the reward again.
I don't think there'll be any new legendaries, personally. But it keeps going up from Rare.

"Good" being "Balanced around the original philosophy" as I see it.

Fortune teller and Duo would both give mult after blueprint/brainstorm and photo multiply your base mult.

You would have roughly 200 mult without either Fortune or Duo, and in this case, Duo would double your mult (essentially adding another 200 mult) compared to Fortune teller which would add only 40.

Duo is much better here

This is mainly because jokers like Fortune teller only activate after all the cards are scored, photograph happens during scoring which massively increases your base mult.

This then makes fortune teller contribute less to your overall score, whereas Duo would contribute to half your score.

Going from 200 to 240 (again, just rough estimates since the math is easier to see), you would gain 20% of your original score from the Fortune teller.

Going from 200 to 400 with Duo is adding an additional 100%.

This essentially makes Duo 5x better than Fortune teller here.

I do still lose cause i try to force a build often but sometimes you just need to hope you can get a build going

Even if a pivot is the right way if someone wants to do a certain build then it does just become luck in the end as to whether or not the seed allows
