When it comes to official modding, I don't think there's very much you could do that would be better than our current situation. Lovely is super powerful and because of the freedom a lot of mods have we get some really cool effects that are just really hard to implement in Lua or just impossible to do so without breaking other mods that touch the same stuff.
I don't think there's really a lot you can do that would just be like a super huge win, but there's a bunch of small things to keep in mind that would be nice. Here are my thoughts:

1. API simplicity
   There are a lot of APIs that Balatro has that are just kind of awkward to use or improve on. A lot of these are just to have a lot of arguments (see create_card [and the "solution" SMODS.create_card) or require you to do some other stuff that isn't very explicit (things like you need to emplace cards after making them (which SMODS.add_card trys to fix).
2. Performance
   Balatro was not the most efficient game and especially when modded it tends to chug kind of hard. There's quite a few things that could be optimized and I think any optimizations you can make would benefit both the vanilla and modded experience. One in particular is quite a few cards use update that do a bit of work that don't need to run every frame. Steel joker comes to mind (it has to loop over the entire deck, once per steel joker, per frame). If you had some kind of lazy_update that let you run the code only when you needed it (e.g. before generating ability UIBox/loc_vars, doing calculate, etc.), this would probably help with a bunch of stuff. I also know the game just kind of chugs a bit when you have a whole bunch of UI elements. Like if you have a whole bunch of tags and/or cards. This isn't really effect vanilla, but if it could be optimized it would really help modded.

3. Docs
   There's a bunch of systems in Balatro that aren't really well explored. Generally, we can figure out the API for stuff and how to use them from examples, but some of the more complicated systems get a bit harder to use without documentation. The UI system is the one that immediately springs to mind. It is a quite complicated system to figure out, and our docs aren't the greatest. Being able to have docs that not only just explain what things do, but also when you should use them and common pitfalls/things to keep in mind would be super helpful. These are the kind of things you probably have in your head that are hard to figure out. Even just providing some sort of poorly written docs/tips for us to integrate into our docs or just reviewing our docs for inaccuracies or missing info would be useful (UI Structure and Event Manager are the main vanilla related docs we have.)
4. Error Handling
   There's quite a few things in Balatro that when you use them slightly incorrectly they produce weird results (or hard to debug crashes) (to be fair smods is also susceptible to this issue). Things like passing the wrong type of argument or (as mentioned in the API simplicity section) things that require you to do multiple steps. It would be nice if more assertions/checks are added to make it easier to debug when you do something wrong, what you did.
