I couldn't hear a rhythm, so looked for the lights and didn't get it

I have the exact same problem. It's a bug. I hope Ubisoft fixes it soon.

There is a rhythm to it, but it's not like a typical 4x4 beat that you'd hear in most music. It's a series of 2 or 3 beeps on a loop and you have to click in time with the beeps, ON the beeps. It helps to listen to the sequence run a few times before attempting it and you should hear how the sequence loops.
If you turn the volume up, you can hear faint mechanical clicks between the beeps, which helps with timing and figuring out the looped pattern.
I knew people would struggle with this when I tried it the first time.
