#I love agressive barbarians

With all the hate for the barbarians, I feel like it would be nice to defend them. For me, barbarians, as agressive as they are, serve the following purposes:

  1. One issue I often have in Civ (and their weak barbarians) is that at the start of the game, if you don't want to go all militaristic, you have two choices : the safe one where you build a reserve army to deal with other players eventually attacking you, or the risky one to focus solely on economy in order to rapidly gain the upper hand, but if you're attacked by a stronger civilization early, you're toast. That's not ideal, because then you're encouraged to neglect your military capacity (worst case scenario, you lose early and launch another game), whereas being careful and suppporting a potentially useless one punishes you in the long run. With strong barbarians, conflict is a given, but still mild enough to don't force you completely into a militaristic game. Instead of having a coin toss between war and peace, you're constantly in a low-intensity conflict that requires everyone to carefully adapt their military force, and you're less likely to be caught off guard by other warrings nations.

  1. During the Demo, my spawning spots were pretty much always close to other nations, with at least 2 or 3 met after the first age. There, barbarians were nasty, but nasty for everyone. You had to be carfeful exploring, but so did your neighbours. And if you didn't want to take care of them, the other nations would eventually. Fighting them or not is a trade-off between getting xp and loot or focusing on economy and sparing your armies, and as the 1st point explained, it smoothes the risks going with overly aggressive nations. But then, in my current game, I spawned in a very empty region, with huuuuge tracts of lands for me to claim East and North of my position, with only the Aztecs somewhat present in the South. Without barbarians, this would be the greatest of starts. Bu the "empty" lands were infested with these scums, I lost a lot of good scouts, and this is also where this game shines maybe the brightest: it forced me to adapt. So for me to claim these lands (and the barbarian camps loot), I took an early militaristic direction with Spartans, which I didn't plan to do at first, which is GREAT. I don't want to say "I'll play that", then play that, like in old Civ. I want to feel like every game is a mystery, and a test to my adaptability. And the barbarians did exactly that.

Without the agressive barbarians, my game would just have been to rush there and settle, taking advantage of a generous spawn. In crowded spawns, I would have had to choose between preemptive wipeout of close neighbours, focusing on economy while praying not to get attacked, or having a mid-range military capacity that may serve no other purpose than stay idle and empty my treasury for nothing. Barbarians are a key part in the early need for adaptation, while encouraging a more subtle military doctrine, and for this, I thay many thanks to them (as I drove my spartan spears into their hearts).

TL;DR: git gud, strong barbarians are actually good for you

The main recommendations so far involves adding settings for barbarians, so that they can be scaled up or down based on how the player wishes to enjoy the game. Would be ideal. I even threw in the suggestion to add a setting that makes them even tougher 😄

Well, the players should obviously enjoy the game the way I enjoy it 😄

I think the biggest problem right now is that barbs are the same from novice through grandmaster

#

Barbs are pretty hard, nothing crazy IMO, but sometimes they get out of hand and for new players that can really suck

I don't think the barbs are even that hard. I appreciate that they have a presence and aren't just pushover things you need to swat away. I also like that they can appear with certain events.

is there an event or something that spawns a 44 strength barbarian outside all of your cities in the early game? barbarians are a healthy nuisance, but this specific event has spoiled two of my starts now because the only way to prepare for it is to just not proactively use my army

I feel it almost always happens very shortly after age 2 happens. Like every single game I think

I will keep telling my hate for the barbarians and will not play the game anymore until the setting gets added

#

it is such a basic feature in other games why is it not on millenia at launch

ok am i just not supposed to make a new city before age 2? you can't tell me that two barbarians each as strong as an entire army spawning right outside my capital automatically razing my town after slaughtering the few units I have is intended gameplay, for whatever reason I barely remember this from the demo but it just seems ridiculous now

Civ I always played with barb invasion and IT wasnt enough. Here I also enjoy aggressive barbs

I agree, the barbarians are fine and do not need a nerf imho.
