Based on my research for the 2022 Kaggle Notebook competition, I've built this simple salary calculator for Data Scientists. https://jobs-in-data.com/salary-calculator It involves 5 features that came up as the most important in the model where the target variable was the salary reported by the survey participants:

  • country
  • years of ML experience
  • years of coding
  • industry
  • position name
The basic objective of the calculator is to give a reasonable benchmark for salary negotiations.

Hello everyone! Hope all are doing well. I would love to revive sone career guidance on career transition. I am currently an international student of data science and artificial intelligence in Canada and volunteering as Junior ML Engineer in Omdena. I have around 8 years experience in IT company in India in different t domain and this is my career transition phase . 1) I would like to know initially what kind of companies I need to target to apply for interviews as to get through BIG 4 companies will be quite challenging in initial phase. I have experience in getting no response from employers for which I have applied through LinkedIn and company websites for fall 2023 internships. Hence it is becoming a matter of concern. 2) How to learn LLM and NLP practically as due to high computing power most of the softwares are not suitable for my computer. 3) What are the data science and artificial intelligence skills which are mostly in demand in Canada ?

The data for the calculator is coming from the Kaggle survey, so someone must have reported those salaries. However, the dataset does not contain the actual company names.
As for your second question, here you can find some job offers in Nigeria: https://jobs-in-data.com/l-nigeria . Many of them are still active despite being posted and indexed quite some time ago. For more details please PM me, because Discord does not support threads, and I do not want to spam others.

Hi all, I recently got my masters in math and decided to pivot to a data job. I took the google data analytics and advanced data analytics certificates on coursera, and I am planning to start applying to data analyst jobs and hopefully work my way up to data science/machine learning. Question: Are projects like performing an EDA on a dataset off Kaggle or creating a ML/regression model worth putting in a resume? I want to have some substance to my resume rather than just a masters in math, so advice that could help me land an interview would be great!

Beyond the obvious (clear communication, nice story-telling during behavioral questions, good body language, etc), I really like when candidates ask me questions. Interviewers ask towards the end if the candidate has any questions. They usually don’t ask any which is such a missed opportunity! Most candidates don’t realize that it’s not just the company interviewing them, they should also interview the company. So use this opportunity to figure out if you would like working there. Ask about the people you would work the most with, the tools you would use, ask if the manager has a plan for onboarding, do they have a project lined up for you? Ask about your day-to-day responsibilities, your boss’s management style, work-life balance, etc. Anything that would help you to decide if you want to take the job.

That's quite interesting! I can see why people would say that of-course but things change. Yes it is more well grounded because its been around for a longer time compared to Data Science. In terms of stability, sure you are likely to have a job if you do statistics. I think at this moment l would say Data Science is still growing. My professor told our class that DS is a convergence of multiple disciplines including statistics. in that way in allows you to get a larger scope of skills.

Applying for CS master programs after DS undergrad(it's sort of weird when a lot DS masters come from other apartments). Any tips regarding program selections? (like something you would wanted to know, for example M. Eng vs M.CS vs M.S. in CS as I see in some schools)

#

Also how hard is it to do a thesis option, typical requirements and hours per week spent, etc?

drowsy girder
# carmine bay I've been hearing some rumors that Statistics is better than Data Science as a c...

The problem I got with DS major is that most of the DS jobs/internships prefer a master(but really nothing can stop you from standing out among others and get one). But generally more exposure to CS stuffs are very fun and I'm not sure if I'll get the same exposure major in Statistics.
I took, for example, a statistical NLP course(which really helped me with understanding transformers) with a bunch of CS masters and another CS undergrad.

#

The reason I'm mostly applying for CS masters is that most of the DS masters require to take similar courses like DS majors(on a different level of course). So you can also do stats and switch to DS masters later if you are interested in Data Science jobs.

Hi everyone, I am trying to tailor my resume for data analyst positions. One of the advices I receive regarding resumes is to show how your work has made an impact. However, since I am only starting out, my experience is just projects I did for school or personal projects that showcase that I can use certain tools like R and Python. I can't really say that through my analyses, I helped my company increase ROI or sales or anything. I appreciate any insights in this matter.

Hello

I have just received an interview invitation for the position of Data Science Lead, and I would like to discuss a few things.

While I have a strong foundation in data science knowledge and practical experience, I actually consider myself a fresh graduate, and I don't possess significant leadership experience. I understand that I may not be qualified for this role.

However, since they have extended the invitation, it suggests that some of my abilities match the requirements of this position, and the role is advertised as entry-level. Therefore, I want to give it a try.

I would like to ask for your advice on how to prepare for a Data Science Lead interview, including potential interview questions and study materials. Any information related to the interview would be greatly appreciated because I have been unable to find much information about Data Science Lead interviews on Google.

Thank you all.

How can I know that? İf I like it or not, if playing with data is funny for me, if it will not be boring for me? Because you know that there can be some challenges while learning and they can demotivate us, I want to know that Is this happening to me because this job is not for me or it is just an challenge and if i keep going it willl be fine. Unfortunately, I have a feeling thats because of the current market state. All the jobs ads I see in my country require you to be at least a mid level engineer. Recently some companies laid off a lot of their workforce recently where I'm from, which makes it even harder. Hello !

I am a second-year cs university student (5-year engineering program), My university offers a speciality of 3 years in "AI & Data Science" so I'll probably join it the next year. I've decided to focus on becoming a MLE because this job simply fascinates me.
Honestly we have a pretty intense program in mathematics and cs, so I feel confident in my foundational knowledge.

My question is: during this year ( and probably the next year ) what do you advise me to do to become a "Great engineer Machine Learning" ?

  • focus on the probabilities and statistics we are studying to have an excellent foundation for later ?
  • learn Python's libraries (NumPy, Matplotlib, Pandas... ) and try to practice as much as possible ?
  • should I get used to reading AI and ML papers ? (I've never read a paper before)
  • doing LeetCode all day long to improve my problem-solving skills ?
  • Should I have good knowledge in SWE (Software Engineering )?
  • Is SQL really that important ? We'll study it next semester, should I go beyond the university curriculum to deepen my knowledge in this area ?

I hope you've many advice for me.
I will carefully read your answers/advices which will be valuable to me for the year to come.

Howdy, lurker here.

Hoping to get a bit of advice. I'm a self taught dev and managed to successfully change career a little over a year ago.

I'd like to transition into data analysis and am currently studying for the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Associate certification. I'm also trying to narrow down what area of data analysis I'd like to focus on that will give me the best chance of securing a data analyst role.

From what I understand, much like programming, a degree isn't necessarily required.. However, I have noticed certain roles (anything to do with finance) usually have some sort of degree as a requirement.

Because of this, I am thinking about focusing on People/HR Analytics but am curious what others might recommend?

Alternatively, I am exploring marketing analytics as I currently work as a dev at a digital marketing company, this SEEMS like it would be ideal but I don't believe there is a pathway into this role with this employer (they do not hire any sort of data analysts and don't seem interested in doing so), so I'd be looking for a new role anyway.

@frank rampart@glass tartan Find maybe 10-20 job ads on LinkedIn that you find interesting and want to apply for, and collect what's in the required experiences/skills section to get a better idea of what you need. A lot depends on the discipline you want to work at. I.e., finance jobs have quite different requirements than healthcare jobs.

Hello all, I'm looking for a bit of career advice, thanks in advance for any guidance:

  • What would be the best starting point for a senior software developer (in a field not directly related to AI, mostly functional programming, Scala, Haskell) looking for a career change into AI? For instance, is Andrew Ng's deeplearning.ai course (this one) still relevant? or outdated? what other resources would you recommend?
For more context, I have a master's degree (from 5 years ago) in which I learned the fundamentals of traditional machine learning, but I never did ML in a professional environment.

Hi!
I'm a senior data scientist from Armenia (31yo) with 4+ years of experience and two master's degrees (RIT-NY, USA; AUA-AM). Last year, I applied to several top PhD programs but was unfortunately rejected—likely due to not having any publications yet, which I'm eager to change.
I'm looking to collaborate with a researcher or professor on AI topics, especially:

  • Multimodal machine learning
  • Autonomous AI agents
  • Knowledge graphs
  • Memory-augmented architectures
  • Reinforcement learning
I've worked in both industry and academia, but honestly feel most at home in academic environments, surrounded by like-minded people. Started my data science journey at 24 (after military service) and have been playing catch-up ever since. While I'm doing well career-wise, I have a strong drive to push further and contribute to meaningful research.
I'm aiming to build up research experience and publish papers before reapplying to PhD programs in December 2026. It's tough to find people working in these areas in Armenia, so I'm reaching out here.

Would love to discuss potential projects or hear any advice on connecting with professors/researchers. I think about just reaching out to authors of the papers I am reading but not sure whether it is good idea.
Feel free to DM
    Thanks for reading 🙂

looks like no one gets a response in this but i'll try anyways 😭 i have a BS in statistics and i feel like most jobs that "use" statistics are ML based or at least very coding-focused, and i wanted to know what would a good AI-proof masters degree be? i see now that a lot of data science masters programs are popping up at high ranking schools, but it feels like the bar to become a data scientist or jobs like it are just going to become higher and higher. i think that a masters in statistics (or applied statistics) is the best way to go because AI might be able to out code someone of a job, but as of right now it doesn't seem like it has the problem solving capabilities of a competent human, so i feel like a masters in stats where it's more math and problem solving focused is the way to go. does anyone have any better insights on this?

#

i would love to not do this but i think that engineering is, for now, AI-proof but i would like to not get a degree in engineering because i'm good at statistics, NOT the best at calculus (even though higher level stats has calculus 😦 )

I am well versed in managing people and also in managing chaos, skilled at communication and presentation....looking for a career shift to better serve myself and my family...and excited to be getting into Data Analysis. I would welcome any advice on a good place to start job wise, I know there are lots of avenues to take but I really want to gain some functional experience as the course is great but would love some folks to help mentor me as I am still learning how to use SQl and R. As a mom of 3 with a partner who also has a full time job it has been tough to commit uninterrupted time to learning this new field but I am determined. Grateful for any words of advice.

No way...AI is good to solve problems and automated things(codes, models etc..). But AI applications is like a bubble now. AI can´t make a single IoT device( can make the codes). But is inutile to make hardware, sensors and make real life electronics.

IoT, sensors, electronics + AI, yes. Good one. AI alone, is just make more and more dev stuff's obsolete. In the end, the unique IT that will not be killed by this, is those ones that Ai can´t bet: make hardware's, IoT devices, Electronics and cybersecurity to minimize the damage creates by AI generates issues.

Hi everyone, I need some guidance regarding my career path.

I have around 2 years of experience in WordPress and frontend development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). Recently, I upgraded my skills and completed learning Python and Django, and I am planning to move toward backend development and freelancing.

However, I see that the market is heavily demanding AI/ML skills, and I feel a bit confused about which path I should choose next:

-- Should I continue focusing on Python + Django + Backend and grow deeper into that track?

-- Or should I start shifting toward AI/ML, since it seems to have a bigger future demand?

-- If I choose AI/ML later, what certifications or learning paths would be valuable for beginners?

I’d really appreciate any advice from the community — based on market reality, long-term growth, and what makes sense for someone with my background.

Thank you in advance!

# topaz haven Hi everyone, I need some guidance regarding my career path. I have around 2 yea...

My advice: If you choose the AI/ML path, the certifications (and roadmap) depend heavily on what specific career you're aiming for—whether it's AI Researcher, Architect, Context/Prompt Engineer, Advisory. Etc.
Also, high market demand doesn't mean you need to shift immediately. Top-tier AI roles often require deep expertise (5-7+ years) or strong academic backgrounds (bc oversupplied junior AI talent).
My suggestion: Since you already know Python/Django, try to shift slowly. Stick to Backend for now but start integrating AI features into your projects. Keep in mind that the market is correcting, and some companies are actually slowing down or freezing AI/ML hiring for junior roles

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working on my resume for AI/ML roles (internships, jobs, projects) and would love some feedback to make it stronger and more impactful. It highlights:

Skills: Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, LangChain, Hugging Face, RAG pipelines, LLMs, LoRA, MLOps, Docker, SQL
Experience:
Fine-tuning LLMs (e.g., Llama 2, Mistral) and building RAG pipelines
Deploying Whisper-based ASR systems with 95% transcription accuracy
Implementing CI/CD pipelines and optimizing SQL queries
Key Projects:
SmartShop (personalized grocery recommender: 78% accuracy, scaled for 10K+ DAU)
Real-time Speech Recognition & Translation (Whisper Large V3 with ~5-second latency)
Published research in ICONIC2023 and ETEMPS2023
I’d appreciate your suggestions on:

How to improve clarity or focus for recruiters in the AI/ML field.
Highlighting projects or experience better to stand out.
Any format/style tips to enhance readability.
Thank you so much for taking the time to help – I value your insights!

Best,
Yash

Hi everyone! I am Yashu. I am learning applied MLops using various courses going from basics to advance. Resources I am going to use are such as

  1. Mathematics using 3blue1bbrown + khan academy
  2. Python + SQL + Pandas + numpy from Kaggle Courses
  3. ML using Andrew Ng ML Specialization + kaggle intro and intermediate ml
  4. Deep learning using Fast.ai practical deep learning course
  5. Next -> Hugging Face NLP / Transformers
  6. For deployment and dockerization using CampusX MLOps playlist + othe resources.

Before this i was learning full stack development and I am nearly end of the course. I can create a full stack applications ( websites ). Now I want to pivot to MLops . I don't have any job experience, nor i do have anyone in my connection so that i can ask them for guidance. I am from a village
But I am afraid that will this pay off ? I have no degree, so if i learnt the skills how can i get a job ? I have some ways listed that I would try but I am hoping for answers here from someone from the industry, who actually knows what is required and how things work.

I read many articles + AI prompts for curating this roadmap. Theres more detail i have not listed above . So please if you can guide me or just tell me what should i do next + job requirements, and what i should include or exclude from the resources i have listed, or any advice that'll be really a great help.

900+ funds launched through the program since 2020. Free, 14-week virtual program. They've added some interesting new tools this year — automated fund formation, micro-LP activation, AI co-pilot features.
I'm in the current Venture Institute cohort and can vouch — it's bootcamp-style, cohort-based, and the community support (both from the team and fellow participants) is a real differentiator. Applying through a current participant's referral also gives your application a boost.

The HAMZI.AI Financial Ecosystem Dataset is a large-scale, richly structured synthetic dataset engineered to reflect the full complexity of a real-world retail banking and financial services environment. It covers every layer of the customer-to-transaction lifecycle — from demographic profiling and account management to transaction forensics, behavioral risk signals, and AML indicators.

This dataset is designed as a production-grade training resource for machine learning engineers, data scientists, quantitative risk analysts, and financial AI researchers who require data that goes far beyond the shallow toy datasets commonly available online.

ℹ️ This repository hosts a 1,000-row representative sample for exploration, EDA, and model prototyping. kaggle: https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/hamziai/3-million-enterprise-bank-records-ultimate-fraud

||"How do you actually know if you're ready for an ML engineer role? Let's try Skillever"||

Been thinking about this a lot lately. Kaggle scores are great for data science, but they don't always translate to what ML engineer interviews actually test – system design, reasoning under ambiguity, explaining tradeoffs.
I've been beta testing a tool that runs you through an AI-powered evaluation & mock interview and gives you a breakdown across multiple skill dimensions. It's free right now.
Anyone else find the gap between your ability and interview performance frustrating? Would love to hear how others have approached this.
