What is the best way to go with Demand forecasting using sales data, if there is only 18 months of data, and increasing test set is giving out very different results?
I have switched to weekly, so there are more test predictions to be made. Even though if it works well, on test data, there is no guarantee it will forecast next weeks well, since the data is limited and maybe has guessed test months by repeating pattern, seasonality.

Try giving the EBM a go. It's multivariate, you'll get f(x) for every variable, and the final prediction is the combination of every function that takes the feature as an input. You could use those insights for the stakeholder if there is one, and diagnose what the issue is.

Also, to encourage the model to find seasonal trends, sine/cosine encoding the month is advisable if you haven't yet. (EBM performance is also on par with XGBoost, but it's not GPU-accelerated, so you'll want to encode your samples via Spark)

Deciding on a MacBook Pro with M4 chip.

1 - I want to understand which one of the configurations below are just enough or an overkill for my use case ?

Hi all,
I’m not sure if this is the right place for this, but I’m currently looking for work—ideally freelance projects for now. I have a PhD in physics with publications in both physics and machine learning.

I enjoy working with tabular data, but I also have experience with deep learning (PyTorch) and image-based models. I can build basic web apps to deploy models, and I’m comfortable with scientific programming (C++, Python, etc.), including running code on supercomputers.

On Monday, July 7th, I earned my third bronze medal under one of my datasets and reached the Expert rank. However, later that same day, some changes were made to the ranking system, medal allocation, and leaderboards.

When I checked my profile in the evening, my medals had been removed, and I was downgraded to a rank with a blue border - which previously represented Contributor, but now, after the removal of Novice, I honestly don’t even know what it means anymore.

I feel cheated. I’ve put a lot of time and effort into creating quality datasets and notebooks on my profile. I was genuinely excited to grow and develop, and suddenly I have to fight for the Expert rank all over again.

I guess it’s motivating in a way - but having a rank taken away just like that doesn’t feel right.
Support hasn’t responded so far, so marcelbiezunski went from being an Expert for a single day… to being I don't even know what again.

In my case, however, it's actually motivating, and I plan to focus on notebooks now. Hey guys! I’m pretty new to Kaggle competitions and currently working on the Titanic dataset. I’ve got a few things I’m confused about and hoping someone can help:
1- Preprocessing Test Data
In my train data, I drop useless columns (like Name, Ticket, Cabin), fill missing values, and use get_dummies to encode Sex and Embarked. Now when working with the test data — do I need to apply exactly the same steps? Like same encoding and all that?Does the model expect train and test to have exactly the same columns after preprocessing?
2- Using Target Column During Training
Another thing — when training the model, should the Survived column be included in the features?
What I’m doing now is:
Dropping Survived from the input features
Using it as the target (y)
Is that the correct way, or should the model actually see the target during training somehow? I feel like this is obvious but I’m doubting myself.
3- How Does Kaggle Submission Work?
Once I finish training the model, should I:
Run predictions locally on test.csv and upload the results (as submission.csv)? OR
Just submit my code and Kaggle will automatically run it on their test set?
I’m confused whether I’m supposed to generate predictions locally or if Kaggle runs my notebook/code for me after submission.

  1. Yes. You should have the data cleaned, encoded and ready to work for both the train and the test. The model basically uses the train and the test to generate predictions then validate them

  2. No, in training you are focused on the features that have relationship to the target you are trying to analyze or predict. The validation (y) has the target feature so the model can predict and calculate the mae or whatever it is you need.

  3. Idk how kaggle notebooks and submissions work but I do it locally then submit the .csv file and that is it

True so you can drop the first column to reduce data redundancy because if the thing is not groupB or groupC, this means it is groupA. Also, you can automate the whole process using pipeline instead of coding it by hand. You also don't have to write each column an example would be to use:

If you are thinking of becoming a Data Scientist (or even Using Gen AI for certain related purposes), it is necessary to go behind the screen. A good conceptual or at least intuitive knowledge of 1. application of derivatives and integration 2. Probabilistic distributions 3. Matrices and transformation (extensively used) 4. Some concepts of Machine learning (like just go through at least, say, "Statquest video by Josh Starmer on ML" to form right intuition). 'So do your preparatory at least from suggested perspective' is my opinion.

As You are Entering in ML and DL The First Thing you should understand is python as it is very convenient for it and after that learn some form of basic maths like matrix calculations and then move onto to Numpy for Refining Data and Analysing it Then build some real projects and then move onto Matplotlib and then SQL and then Scikit learn and then Pytorch or tensorflow and then Open CV and then flask

This is a long journey and you would requried maths no matter which library you would enter so research and learn about the maths required in that library before learning that library

I have one question, I'm training ml models for the prediction, which is classification problem of 3 classes, where the number of samples are similar but the predition is skewed.
First class and second class is predicted with low precision tough, third class is never predicted. What's the reason? I can' t find the reason.
Before, when I applyed reinforcement learning, where the three classes were assigned to three actions and one action is never selected, too.

I wrote some code but I do not see an + Add Dataset in the current Notebook editor. Guess you have to add datasets ahead of running so they are mounted properly.

The current editor does not have a side bar. Then it suggest Add Data in the setting near "Commit and Run" there is no commit and run button just the Share and Shave Version button.

#

There is a Setting dropdown from the menu but it just has "Turn off Internet" "Accelerator" and "Environment Preferences" No Add Data under any of the menu drop downs.

#

Heads up if anyone else has this issue. It's under File->Add Input

Ok so this is a noob question but: How do y'all get intuition for which model to fit on the given data? I'm currently working on Titanic but I wanna learn this general skill of knowing what works and what doesn't. I know that most of it is experience but is there anything else to help guide the experience to help progress/learning?

It depends on the type of data you have if the relation between features and target is linear or simple you can use linear models and if the relation is complex to capture you will need a better model . It also depends on size of data some models work better with small to medium datasets while others produce better results on large datasets there are other factors too like the output you expect etc

IMO learn mostly numpy and pandas, plotting is important but you can generate code for plotting very very easily whereas Numpy and Pandas are more important

Anyone have a recommended way to do these competitions? I tried using Kaggle notebooks but I don't really like them. I am much more used to Google colab but I don't want to have to keep downloading datasets to my hard drive (almost out of space). I know there is a way to link it to Google Drive so I'm considering that.

stuck on "draft session starting" for 10 minutes now after accidentally closing a tab and probably going to have to re-run an entire notebook because kaggle somehow doesn't seem to support persistent sessions despite happily keeping an idle one open for hours when it's just in the background

and I'm reflecting that I seem to spend an enormous amount of time working around weird bugs in Kaggle to the point that I'd much rather use Jupyter locally and just remote in for the GPU
