As of yet, OpenAI hasn’t gave a reason as to why they chose to shut down, though I suspect it’s because of a combination of maintenance costs and possible IP lawsuits (such as one from Ghibli).

Sora has existed for 1 year and a month, and has shutdown after 3 months Disney had entered a deal with OpenAI

This is somewhat bad news for those of us who are concerned about existential risk from AI, and only slightly good news for people who are concerned about AI videos.

They shut down Sora so that they could use that compute to double down on training their frontier foundation models. That means they stopped being stupid about their priorities and are fighting to win.

Many other AI video platforms exist, some of which are more capable and realistic than Sora. Maybe some people will stop making AI videos just because Sora doesn't exist, but many people also only made and shared them in the app and weren't spreading them around online. That closed ecosystem doesn't exist anymore, so who knows whether this will actually impact the amount of AI video on social media, and in which direction.

I can be happy in principle that Sora was shut down, but I mostly care about the actual consequences, which I expect to be bad.

It's like if you successfully dethroned a corrupt king, but you can see that his successor will be twice as ruthless, and his court is still corrupt. Just doesn't feel like much of a win.

They have not given an statement on it

#

on the why

#

and we dont know what they will do in the future

#

maybe it is what you say

#

but

#

these people are stupid

#

like really man I do not respect them, and from everything we have seen, they only care about money

#

if they were not able to maintain it

#

Dunno but, seems that stuff isnt going that well for them

#

maybe im just hopeful

#

but these guys have put way too much resources on trying to make the AIs act like girlfriends for me to consider them masterminds

There was an article from the information that I was unable to access, but I believe the people who say that that is what it said (and The Information's reporting has been very accurate).

I'm not saying they're masterminds, but they have been forced to focus. They still want to keep developing Sora, but as world model training rather than just video generation, which was pointless as a product and took up a lot of their compute for inference.

The point is, it didn't suddenly collapse. They reallocated their resources.
