I've recently seen a bunch of interesting examples of getting attention on social media using ads. Especially @sick basin had pretty good results on reddit, getting a cost per click of about 0.1 dollar.

We have some funds to experiment with this, find an approach that converts (e.g. get people to sign up). Who wants to work on this?

Things to do

  • Research ad options (reddit, google, etc)
  • Set up infrastructure for measuring (we already use google analytics)
  • Try various ads and keywords

Please note there can be downsides/risks to doing ads and I’d ask a bunch of people who might have good models before doing anything large-scale

Based on a study that I shared on #1192663113158377593 I think it is important to talk about the benefits of a pause instead of talking so much about risks.

Very good point Pato, the benefits of pausing... That's a frame I haven't even considered. To me it's just so obvious that it doesn't require explanation, but I suppose it does.

It is hard to think of "benefits" of a pause, because at its core the pause is about avoiding our self destruction. Imagine people in a car driving towards a cliff and arguing on the best benefits of steering the car away from the cliff...
But if people are that thick and we must do it, let's try and brainstorm benefits, besides the obvious one of avoiding a catastrophe...

What comes to mind most immediately, is a kind of rhetorical trick that allows us to reframe risks into benefits

  • Deep Research, Not Just a Race: Encourage more thorough research focusing on the ethical dilemmas and societal impacts that come with rapidly advancing AI technology. Taking the time to make AI actually beneficial for humanity

  • Building Trust: A pause would show a commitment to addressing public anxiety about AI. It would demonstrate that safety and ethics are as important as innovation, and would increase public trust in future AI systems. Reminder that lack of trust will be a serious problem

  • Shared Standards: International cooperation during a pause could establish universal safety, ethics, and research guidelines. This would prevent a fragmented landscape where standards vary widely

Clicks fell from 73 to 0 over the past few days... Were the ads too bad? Lack of tracking that is punished? IDK

@vestal flint a very simple but sad explanation may be that as a new advertiser you were enthusiastically explored but now the data is in, the model thinks there's less to exploit.

That was simply a guess - find someone with real knowledge! But this result appeared when I later searched the admittedly leading "Google ads honeymoon period"

Oh I didn’t even see the rate, just looked at the strategy. Yeah if the strategy wants to maximize conversions and no combination of parameters can achieve this, that sounds like something that could throw it off

Some other ideas:

The ads aren't doing amazing - we're only spending about 6% of our budget. We should set up some more ads! @cursive bronze can you work on this? I have some ideas for pages

I still think localized ads for meetups/protests/workshops/panels/whatever have untapped potential

The practicality may be a bit challenging - it's a hassle to control Google Ads, I've spend a couple of hours on it and I still feel lost

I can't get other volunteers (Matthey, Tyler) to set things up too

if we manage to find someone who really grabs this issue by the balls and makes it work, I recon it would take them 15 mins to add an ad for a local protest

I can try giving it another go this week — I set up one campaign that I really hoped would do better by now 😦 Alternatively, if it's in pauseAI's budget, there are ad consultants that work full time on creating google campaigns, including for ad grant accounts where performance is really hard to predict (as is the case here haha)

My impression: existing members are all beginners here - enough that most of us have serious imposter syndrome.

If you were prepared to take quite a hands-on role - patiently consult with the movement as customers in case there's hard to grok domain stuff, but then actively spin up and track some campaigns, I think you'll bring lots of value.

I'm more than happy to take on a hands-on role. There's really not a lot of work inside the account though (Google Ad Grants ≠ Paid Google Ads).

Instead, most of the value comes from a properly structured site with the right content, so would be great to chat with whoever is in charge of those parts (+SEO?) as well.

We had a chat and I'm sure we should take whatever Fredrik can offer. @vestal flint access to the relevant ad account would mean he can see what we've tried before, but a chat where you relate our previous woefully inadequate experiences would be useful too. @sleek fog its suggested we create more pages targeting specific searches. Good SEO mostly needs to add structure and tune copy more than completely change the site, but given you are looking at top-level changes anyway I'm sure you should talk to Fredrik too.

For some reason Google has paused the ads. They need me to Answer a few questions about your client's business operations, which I have submitted a couple of times already, but it keeps failing for some unknown reason. I've reached out to their support on Aug 22nd.

Have you considered promoting on social media platforms like YouTube or TikTok? TikTok advertising is relatively cheaper I think

There’s also Disney campaign manager that covers Disney+, Hulu and ESPN, unsure how costly it is though
