#Blessed Item slider

It would be nice to be able to adjust the % for blessed item drops - currently 1% and I’ve found like maybe 3-5 while leveling to 31 and it just feels so rare it might as well not exist outside of the upgrading system. I’d personally like to make it 5 or 10% so there’s a reasonable chance if you keep farming that boss while xping you might end up finding a bonus upgrade.

Not sure if this is already part of the “rare drop” slider or not

I feel the same -- actually in classic gamer conspiracy theory fashion for a while I was starting to think it was hardcoded to give you a few blessed drops in the early game and none later, because on both my playthroughs that's what happened. I think the reason is that earlier enemies drop items more frequently in general (lots of junk like cloth) so the odds of seeing blessed things is higher.

Not helpful for vanilla, but in my mod (Arcanism) I've implemented some mechanics to help with this that might interest you:

  • base bless drop increased to 1.5%
  • new line of consumable magic items called Scrolls of Luck of Soluna that are reasonably expensive and come in 5 tiers. They all triple bless chance for dropped items for 15 minutes, but only for enemies up to X level -- the idea being that they're something you can use at any point in the game, but the cost is scaled to ensure it remains a gold sink based on where you're up to. They also function as an extra "try to play without dying" mechanic since they're so expensive and you lose the buff on death.

(NB the version featuring these among many other huges changes is still in testing but it's working pretty decently, just haven't felt rushed to release the update as I don't know if anyone is actively playing Arcanism atm other than me)

neat! good opportunity for gold sink in my (obvious) opinion

quartz pike
#

Yeah it was going to be a potion similar to xp potion

warped sundial
#

i've made a lot of very opinionated changes in Arcanism just while experimenting to see how things feel

quartz pike
#

I just am not sure I want that phase of the game to be easier

#

Really devalues sivakruxes

#

So it would be a raid drop most likely

warped sundial
#

Yeah that's fair, they need to be kept rare enough that sivas matter

#

fwiw i'm finding with my balance that i can't keep up my bless % boost scrolls often because of the price, and the chance of a blessed item being one of the ones i'm hunting for isn't that great esp when say there's 3 guaranteed drops, so 1/3 chance of getting the item i want, then it's still (in my mod) 4.5% chance of being blessed. so i've gotten lucky a few times

I think the main use case personally is actually to make it more viable to find and enjoy blessed items mid-game, because my experience has been that you get a couple early, get almost nothing useful blessed until endgame when you then siva everything

#

a viable alternative to balance this would be, imo, not boosting bless drop rate but either having a lower tier item you can use to bless items up to a certain level earlier, and needing more of it or higher tier item like sivas to bless later items, so they're still valuable. but idk, just food for thought

#

(one thing on my mod's "broad todo list" is a system with more focus on mining, which is possibyl a good area again to work this stuff in, in which you mine citrine stone, combine that with a planar shard in forge to create a citrine shard, and that can be used in a forge with a siva+ancient coal to bless an item early-game before you have access to the one in Fallen Braxonia -- the advantage of fallen braxonia then is you can use those unlimited free tokens instead of citrine shards which are much harder to make)

#

i'm getting in trouble from my own game's community though for spending too much time obsessing over Erenshor so i will have to stop doing stuff soon 😢

#

(sorry for lengthy rambling.)

quartz pike
#

What is your game

warped sundial
#

Dragonfist Limitless, an online incremental game that's like, a martial arts training montage inspired by Dragon Ball Z, Streets of Rage, Punch Club, and some classic incrementals like Clicker Heroes/Tap Titans

#

so we're not in the same genre, but defs in the same field as successful solo devs! 😁

#

(DFL hasn't gotten media coverage, but Game of t he Day on the App Store as well as 2 other features and editor's choice, and Game of the Year for mobile in the incremental genre! -- among a few other winners)

#

^ though, re not in same genre, we defs have stuff in common -- i mentioned back when you 1st released Erenshor's demo, I have an extensively modded Tibia (oldschool mmorpg) server designed to play single player, because it was so much my jam. That's why I love erenshor so much!

quartz pike
#

Ah very cool congrats

warped sundial
#

cheers! did you achieve your dream now of quitting your job and going full time dev, btw?

#

(i assume so w/ the rate of your updates)

quartz pike
#

I left my job about 4 months ago

warped sundial
#

Fuck yeah. Congrats right back at you

quartz pike
#

🔥

warped sundial
#

Are you stressed?

#

I ask because... I was. Hugely.

#

(Am.)

quartz pike
#

Yeah, it feels like it'll all fall apart any day now

warped sundial
#

You're doing so well man. I've said before, and I understand not taking it with weight at the time or having time to process it, because I have likewise had random sycophants trying to offer advice and be like "I've been where you are" when they've actually spent 1 month working on some shitty game nobody played and they really just want to feel important and part of it... erm, if you ever want to bounce things off someone, I'm really happy to be in touch on a personal level. I hope you can see that's not what I'm about -- it's just, there actually aren't all that many solo devs successful on our level to chat to, and it brings a lot of unique pressures.

#

My DMs are actually closed to strangers but if you do wanna bounce stuff lmk and I'll friend you so we can talk. Not even just about Erenshor mechanics -- it's nice not to be saturated with work -- but general pressures around the business stuff, impostor syndrome, whatever. I get it.

#

And it's been 3-4 years for me since release, so I've worked through a lot of stuff you're probably going through.

#

(And I wish I'd had someone to talk to then.)

quartz pike
#

I'll put you on the contact list for sure, appreciate it

#

It's a wild ride

#

Imposter syndrome is the big one for sure

#

It's getting better though

warped sundial
#

Good to know. And it is, yeah. There are a lot of moving goal posts -- if you're anything at all like me, you started makign something and took shortcuts and didn't worry too much about certain elements of polish, and now it feels like your game is more successful than it deserves to be, and all these other things you skimped out on are embarrassing and it makes you feel like you need to make the game live up to how people actually already feel about it

#

i know in my case, my vision for my game has entirely changed since launch, as now I have way, way higher expectations for it to live up to -- some my players', mostly my own

quartz pike
#

Haha having modders dig through the source code was a very exposed feeling

#

Because that's exactly how I worked

warped sundial
#

omg yes. I haven't had to deal with that -- being mobile+online game (server authoritative) there's no room for modding, so AFAIK I've only had one person decompile, and it's IL2CPP so it's not as naked and exposed as your code

#

personally I would be fucking horrified hahaha

#

it's like someone going through your underwear drawer in public

quartz pike
#

Basically, I didn't expect it

warped sundial
#

as a major modder of your game myself who now has an intimate understanding of your code, try to think of it like this:
you have a team of programmers working under you for free who are likely to find the reason for bugs or issues or offer advice on things if you want it, and whilst programmers can be a judgy elitist bunch, we're all people who are looking in your code because we love the game so much that we want it to be the best it can be

#

so nakedness aside, it's a massive boon

quartz pike
#

Yep that has proven true already

#

People have found and reported bugs time and again

#

Ones I wouldn't have quickly found

warped sundial
#

I don't know your background but I come from a professional (corporate) dev bg before game dev so if you ever do want to ask questions about stuff that's likewise something i'm happy to give tips on

#

(I mean architectural stuff, which can help a LOT with managing bugs/regressions)

#

i also totally understand wanting to just own your code and not wanting people judging and offering opinions too so no sweat -- everybody works their own way.

#

and i always say, with indie game dev, there are 2 types of games:

  • games with perfect, structured, neat, testable code bases and sound architecture
  • games that get released
#

Pragmatism trumps all.

quartz pike
#

My background is healthcare and sales

#

Programming has always been just a hobby

warped sundial
#

Oh interesting, I'm always surprised and impressed that peeps can have it as a hobby on the side to completely unrelated careers, since it's so... well, you need to have the right kind of headspace and brain and stuff. Having said that, actually working software dev professionally is... not very nice... so it's probably the better way
But yeah, even more impressive you actually managed to make, finish, release a game, considering

quartz pike
#

I wouldn't want to do it professionally I don't think

warped sundial
#

yeah. 'specially not now, with the mass layoffs. it's choc full of corporate wank, tech bros, investor bullshit, startup crunch culture, and elitism

#

good for sociopaths, not so much creative types

#

was very happy to go my own way.

#

i'll let you go in a sec as I'm sure you're busy--what time is it for you? based in the USA?

#

I'm in Australia and it's 9am so I'm chatting to you over morning coffee hehe

quartz pike

Sitting down to dinner so we'll catch up another time
