You don't buy an API key, you can create many without additional cost.
You have to create an account on OpenRouter and buy credits which you then can spend via API key authorization in several client. Or via the OpenRouter chat interface, if you just want to test a model quickly.

After you created an account you can create an API key even without purchasing credits here -> https://openrouter.ai/settings/keys

Manage your keys or create new ones

It will even work in SillyTavern, but only with :free models, which are heavily rate limites (200 requests per day for all :free models combined)
