@cosmic mesa may be able to help

cosmic mesa
#

Let's try reinstalling it, but first, on the INSTALLER for the launcher, right click on it and go to properties, in the general tab, be sure unblock is checked and hit okay. They run the installer again, then the launcher:

#

correct

pliant magnet
#

and I can't figure out if I can look into it in the security tab

ivory saddle
#

do you have an antivirus installed? this sounds like it may be interfering

#

not uncommon for them to just yoink the executable into their virus chest if it's unrecognized

cosmic mesa
#

Yeah, it is super annoying but your anti-virus might have just deleted the file. Check the logs to see what it did.

ivory saddle
#

shouldn't be any reason it just disappeared then, hm

pliant magnet
#

also I did went into my appdata folder and removed everything yarc/ yarg related, after the "can't run" thing though

#

ow, the unblock "thing" apparently is pre-emptively checking the "install anyway" alert, that's why the unblock option wasn't there

#

just re-downloaded the launcher to check, then re-installed it after checking the unblock option... still I double click YARC Launcher and nothing

cosmic mesa
#

Aight so what is in your C:\Program Files\YARC Launcher\ right now?

pliant magnet
#

Uninstall YARC Launcher

#

and YARC Launcher

cosmic mesa
#

Okay, that is right. double click on YARC Launcher there, what happens?

pliant magnet
#

nothing

#

just a loading circle thing pops on the mouse cursor for a frame

cosmic mesa
#

Does a white square pop up in the taskbar for a second?

pliant magnet
#

no

cosmic mesa
#

Hum.... Aight, right click on the launcher and check its properties

pliant magnet
#

what should I be looking for?

cosmic mesa
#

The block thing happen to be there?

pliant magnet
#

no

cosmic mesa
#

send a picture of the security tab

pliant magnet
#

under my current user

cosmic mesa
#

Humm..

pliant magnet
#

directly I believe it runs

#

I grabbed the stable on the site

#

the nightly I didn't test yet

#

yeah, the one you linked me works

#

the YARC launcher is the issue for me

cosmic mesa
#

Hum

#

Let's try adding 'everyone' to the security permissions. In the sercurity tab, click on edit, then add, type in everyone then click 'check name' hit okay, then with everyone highlighted, click full control, and hit okay a few times to back out of all that, then try running it again

pliant magnet
#

still nothing

#

and in fact everyone has full controll

cosmic mesa
#

And you are sure there is no antivirus/malware running? no malwarebytes, norton, macfee, etc? (just double checking)

pliant magnet
#

absolutely

#

not even Windows Defender

#

just to be sure, here's the print of my security tab

cosmic mesa
#

Cool, yeah that should be good.

#

When you right click on the launcher, is 'run as administrator' there?

pliant magnet
#

yes, and I did tried to run AS admin

cosmic mesa
#

Okay. Let's see if there is anything in the event viewer to give us any hints. You can get there from control panel, windows tools

#

In the 'windows logs' section there should be Applications. Any errors for running something should show up in there.

pliant magnet
#

the only "error" I see is from almost a month ago
edit: scratch that, but no error for anything I did today

#

the uninstaller works perfectly, if you're wondering...

#

computers man...

cosmic mesa
#

lol

#

I know there is a lot of Information logs that it vomits out, try running the launcher, see if any information shows up in the logs at all

pliant magnet
#

any chance that it could be hiding any information? 'cause it doesn't show anything at all

#

just tried to run, last log is from 7:36 pm

#

(timezones, minutes ago)

cosmic mesa
#

hummm

#

I don't think it is hiding anything.

#

UAC off?

pliant magnet
#

I'm one of those...

cosmic mesa
#

Good! me too.

#

Okay, let's try this. run inetcpl.cpl , in secruity do a few things. add yarg.in and github.com to the trusted zone (this should allow downloads from being 'this is unsafe'). Under the internet zone, click on custom level and do this:

#

Then redownload it again, rerun it again, unblock again, etc

#

Now, you shouldn't leave the internet "launching applications and unsafe files" like this forever but this is just to test.

pliant magnet
#

like this right?

#

still nothing...

cosmic mesa
#

right

#

Ugh

pliant magnet
#

it was most certainly a windows update f* up, since it was there... and then it wasn't anymore

#

I can deal with downloading manually the nightly-es

#

I do plan on installing W11 soon-ish

#

at this point I was insisting in fixing this problem for the sake of helping figure out what was wrong

#

maybe to apply the fix or something later

cosmic mesa
#

Yeah, which is good because if it happens to one person, it will happen to more so trying to figure these things out is helpful. Thanks for trying all that.

pliant magnet
#

np, thanks for having the patience to try to help

cosmic mesa
#

I'm out of ideas for right now, I'll let you know if I think up anything else

pliant magnet
#

unblocked, run as admin and all that

cosmic mesa
#

Okay, so it isn't a program crash, now we know it is windows blocking it somehow.

cosmic mesa
#

Even though it isn't on, could try adding an exclusion to windows: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/add-an-exclusion-to-windows-security-811816c0-4dfd-af4a-47e4-c301afe13b26 . If that doesn't work next step would be to drop the firewall for a bit to test it. (it does connect out but really it shouldn't stop it from running, this is a shot in the dark)

hoary lynx
#

I know I'm just randomly chiming in but isn't this similar to the problem where one guy didn't have like the default browser apps or something don't know if that would prevent it from opening or not just shooting ideas

#

cause he stripped his windows or something like that lol

cosmic mesa
#

That is true, "The YARC Launcher uses Tauri which relies on WebView 2
Which is microsoft edge"

cosmic mesa
#

Have a link to that convo?

gray pebble
#

Looks like here: #general message

cosmic mesa
#

Great! Looks like Papa has the right idea here: "find microsoft edge webview2 runtime, click modify and it should trigger a repair install"

pliant magnet
#

Now that you mention it, anything edge AND webview that pops up, I simply uninstall it right away

#

When I can (and/ or remember) I'll try repairing it,... or maybe wait a day or two and windows will simply inject it back anyway

pliant magnet
#

yep, that was it. After windows had the "freedom" to sneak in edge and webview2 again, YARC now works...

#

I kinda feel like an idiot for overlooking this, but again, I only use waterfox and duckduckgo

#

'cause I'm paranoid...

#

thanks your for having the patience of helping me troubleshoot

gray pebble
#

Glad you got it figured out!

#

Yeah unfortunately more and more apps are requiring webview to run, so it's kinda important to have. It's dumb that it's connected to Edge, but oh well
