Bemani rhythm games like DDR, IIDX and Gitadora use multiple judgement timings. For example, Sound Voltex uses MISS, EARLY, LATE, HIT, or CRITICAL (perfect hit). Guitar Hero/Rock Band only detects MISS or HIT. Implementing judgement timings has two main advantages. Firstly, it allows for each song to have three major goals depending on player skill level: Pass without failing, FC the song, and 100% CRITICAL FC the song. Secondly, seeing EARLY and LATE judgements when off beat allows players to perfect their timings, improving their rhythm.

Additionally, CRITICAL hits make easier songs fun/useful again for experienced players. Instead of never going back to easier songs once you surpass that difficulty level, those songs become challenging and fun again when setting your goal to perfecting your timing instead of clears and FCs.
