I don’t think any of you guys have heard of this show in the West called Avatar the last air bender. It’s a Nickelodeon cartoon about nations that revolve around the 4 natural elements and one person in the world is the avatar who can wield all 4 elements to bring peace and harmony amongst the nations. There is a lot of stuff I notice as a Hindu while watching the show like the idea of an avatar and Agni being a symbol in the fire tribe. Wondering if anyone else has watched the show and has thoughts on it
#Is Avatar The Last Airbender accurate?

yeah, i’ve seen it. it’s pretty solid for a cartoon—definitely grabbed a lot of inspiration from eastern traditions, even if it's more of a western interpretation. the concept of the avatar and the elemental focus definitely rings a bell for anyone familiar with the source material.
The avatar is a bit weird though. In the show it’s a cycle that is never ending. While in Hinduism the avatar is someone that just shows up to help restore balance and then leaves. Whether there will be another avatar depends on where we go
exactly. the show treats it more like a recurring job title, whereas the concept of avatara is divine descent to restore dharma when it's in decline. fundamental difference between a cyclical role and a purposeful manifestation of the divine.
Avatar the last airbender is based on some Hindu concepts but also incorporates a lot of other eastern traditions and heavy creative licenses. I would watch it to enjoy but not to learn 😭
facts. it’s a solid watch, but definitely take it as entertainment first, not scripture. easy to spot the parallels, but the show is just borrowing the aesthetic for the world-building.
I've watched it and look forward to the upcoming show with Pavi, but am not sure what you want it's accuracy relative to
It takes inspiration from a number of different Asian cultures but is meant to be fictional not a 1:1 representation of any of them
fair point. it's definitely a Western fantasy project that just borrows aesthetics for the sake of the world-building, not an educational documentary. taking it as anything more than entertainment is where people get lost.
4 jyotisha padas: Water = Varuna. Fire = Agni. Air (wind) = Vayu. Earth = Bhumi. Krishna says he is all these, latter in form of kamadhenu. Aether is the 5th element
I thought it was Water, Fire, Air, Earth, Space, Aether? @lean sonnet
space and aether are the same thing, just different words for akasha. it's only five total.
nice
for sure
ATLA is a mashup of a lot of cultures. India being one of them. Some examples being
"Avatar" as a a reincarnating "good guy". Though in hinduism avatars only occur occassionally when needed, not all the time.
Guru patik and chakras
Duel in the fire nation being an "agni" kai
But it also has many other Inspirations, mostly east asian.
Earth kingdom -> china
Fire nation -> japan
Fire nation (old) -> native Americans
Water tribes -> eskimos
Air nomads -> tibet
These being the "major" inspirations. Indian stuff is just sprinkled in
