#Split conversations

I have a conversation going with Gemini that I would like to both be able to continue in the same direction and take in a separate direction. I'm envisioning a way to split or have some kind of kind parent-child relationship to a conversation for tangential or opposite things. Even a copy/paste or duplicate option would work

Without going into personal details, I'm discussing how to remain in a situation. I would now like to take a copy of the conversation and discuss exiting the situation. Gemini has all of the details and knows all of the things I need it to know. It would be time consuming to start a new chat and feed it all the same prompts.

Edit: I tried starting a new conversation and using the exact same prompts. The main issue is the availability of the thinking mode. The responses are different between fast and thinking so the end result is a slightly different conversation. However, it did technically work for my needs.

Umm, I would say such feature in the gemini cli already exist to summarise the chat. Also in the normal gemini chat you could ask it to --> make a summary of all the important info from this chat so that you can carry that to a new chat for context management and just pass it to a new chat. The split chat feature you are talking about really doesn't make sense because you dont really need to start from scratch again and for the summary i already told you what you need to do. If you think about it split chat would require to again put that entire data in the gemini context window again which would just cause it to fill leading to hallucinations nothing else. Your workflow should often be to divide things in small chunks work effectively on a single chunk and then always try to have some context of the previously worked chunks while working with the newer chunk.

Can you provide a little context of what you wanna do so i can understand it better.

Sorry, i will use punctuations and paragraphs next time. I was in a bit hurry during that time.

Interesting never seen someone use gemini for this purpose but yes it is meant to do everything.

So, you wanna conserve that conversation such that no context is being lost. And basically be able to create two seperate paths for the conversation:-

  1. Being able to preseve the friendship
  2. Ending the friendship

I understand why you need such feature being able to divide the chat based on possibilites

For now there is no such feature. But there is always a workaround for everything, what you can try is:-

Now, I want you to provide me a prompt such that i could split this chat from here based on two possibilites.
1) Preserving the friendship
2) Ending the friendship

Please Note: For this to work properly, I would need every context covered in this chat till now. This would help me to just continue the chat in two seperate gemini's.
I want the prompt to be extremely detailed.

This would give you a prompt for your current use case. This is how mostly people would expect you to use these chats. But i do think that the feature you are asking here is actually a good addition, keeping in mind there can be multiple possibilites and event s one wanna cover.

You can always tweak the prompt as per your needs and see what exactly helps you get the result you are aiming for.

This approach is interesting and certainly has value. In testing it, the outcome isn't exactly the same. The best way I can think to explain it is. You and I are having a conversation about this suggestion. Say someone else were to read our conversation. If I asked a follow-up question and both you and this hypothetical other person answered it would be from different perspectives.

On a side note, I do like it when Gemini says things like "You care deeply for this person". Its actually very validating. Especially considering I didn't directly say anything along those lines or even imply it. Gemini drew that conclusion based on my prompts
