I'd say that has been an issue for a while now, but I don't think it's a huge issue. Questing isn't really meant to be difficult and if it is that can be a reason for new players not to do it. I think it could stand to be a little more difficult, but that's about it.

Unfortunately pre-WoD content doesn't really encourage you to branch out into other forms of content so I can see why you'd feel that way. I would also be interesting in seeing it upped in difficulty, but I also see why they prefer not to.
Difficulty is a barrier to entry for a lot of people, and while the game may seem pretty easy, we can never underestimate just how bad at the game most people really are.

sargeras wanted the destruction of azeroth and its very very unlikely that when he raised Argus to fight he didn't know that if he died it would have caused the machinery of death to break

that's fair but Argus was heavily death-ified, so while it's unknown territory, it's possible his death aspect linked him to the Shadowlands, kind of like how mortals normally go to Shadowlands but if they get too fel-corrupted they go to the Nether (having become demons), or how some paladins can go to the Light

Well as far as we know he killed 1 world-soul, that had been completely Void corrupted, so perhaps it went to the Void, or maybe he destroyed its soul (because fel tends to detroy souls)
I just think there's so many unknowns, I don't think we can exclude Argus easily. He is a good possibility among others, and all the arguments against him are usually baseless or too weak because of said unknowns.
Duplicate Gul'dan however, we can safely exclude. We've had MU people die in the AU (Admiral Taylor for example) and AU orcs die in the MU (during the invasion) and this didn't cause any issue, infact Admiral Taylor is in Oribos lol. And both the game and the devs said that alternate universe counterparts don't cause issues, they're like different strands of the same rope, and when 1 AU counterpart (one strand) dies, it just gets merged into the rope (the character).
Same for Xavius, we've killed plenty of Nightmare guys before, hell Ursoc and Ysera were both Nightmare corrupted but still went to the Shadowlands just fine.
An attack from Denathrius is very likely I'd say. In Revendreth there are rumors that Denathrius is the one behind the drought. If he is the one who disabled the Arbiter, then he would indeed be responsible for the drought.
Sargerite Keystone has nothing to do with death or the Shadowlands, it's a titan device that opens portals between planets, so I think this can be excluded

Who’s to say that Argus’ soul wasn’t infused with death magic in order for the lynchpin of the Burning Legion’s strength to work? AKA, the means to rapidly resurrect fallen demons.
When you say “it couldn’t possibly be Argus because that’s not how Titan souls work”, you forget the entire purpose of all that has happened.
The machine of death WASN’T supposed to have a Titan soul thrown at it, let alone one as screwed up as Argus.
That’s why everything broke.
I suspect Denathrius’ dreadlords agents whispered the idea to corrupt Argus with Death magic in order to fulfill the Jailer’s plan.

idk, argus stuff where he was initially corrupted happened a LONG time ago, as evidenced by the alleria turalyon audio drama. I dont think anyone convinced sargeras to do it, and it still wouldnt explain the motivation for muehzala to put sylvanas in charge. Also, its been pretty clear sargeras has killed a BUNCH of world souls. Thats literally what the burning crusade was - wipe every titan, and every planet so the void cant infect anything
also, if ysera and ursoc were some of the last souls, the argus stuff happens WAY too late
